76-Year-Old Grandmother Dies in Pagoda Fire
Cambodia Breaking News, (Kompong Cham province): A 76-year-old woman is dead after reportedly setting fire to a religious stall at Wat Sovanna Riek Pagoda, also called Angkor Wat, in the village of Angkor 6, Angkor commune, Kang Meas district, Kampong Cham province on Sunday, February 23, 2020 at 3:47 am.
Kang Meas district police received information in the early hours of the morning that there was a fire at Wat Sovanna and they immediately went to the scene with water to extinguish the blaze. Police say that the fire destroyed 5x15 metres of wall art, and after the fire they found the charred body of dead grandmother Sorn Ly, aged 76.
The fire and the death are currently being investigated by the criminal police squad.

Update: According to news posted today, the old woman was a Buddhist nun living in retreat at the pagoda. She was using candles because there was no electricity, and she had locked the door, so nobody was able to get in and rescue her. RIP.
