I am guessing China is still using the same system of counting deaths as they did before with the common flu?

USA counted tens of thousands of common flu deaths a year while China less than 100.
Because China only counts one cause of death.
So if you die from bacterial pneumonia induced by the common flu (flu weakened the body so that a common bacteria could kill the host) USA would count it as a flu death + the bacteria that but China only as bacterial pneumonia.
Not sure about how they calculate the deaths.

what are the odds of whole families wiped out in days if these 'facts' are really true:

76,000 infected
1,800 died
4 in 5 sick people have mild symptoms only
mostly the elderly and people with underlying diseases are among the seriously sick ones

It just doesn't seem to add up. Waiting for someone to solve the puzzle
Yeah, I wonder this too. And why is it a higher number of medical workers are dying from it? Of course they are more exposed but if it is no worse than the flu as some ppl are claiming....??

Or is it the case this virus more readily develops into a bacterial pneumonia than the flu? And they have run out of anti-biotics? Something doesnt add up as you say..

Yes I don't think we are being told the full story, it appears that the healthy doctors, workers at the hospital and the family that died may have been exposed multiple times due the the nature of their work or living with a family member already infected. Did a bit of digging on previous viruses ( H1N1) and the effects of reinfection before the body has chance to build up a resistance may be one of the reasons why these people did not recover.

" In healthy individuals, the first encounter with a virus leads to a primary antibody response. When an infection occurs with the same or a similar virus, a rapid antibody response occurs that is called the secondary antibody response. Antibodies are critical for preventing many viral infections, including influenza. But reinfection may occur if we encounter the same virus before the primary response is complete"

I suppose we will find out eventually

South Korea today confirmed 15 more cases of the COVID-19 coronavirus bringing its total number of infections to 46, amid growing concerns that the illness is spreading despite tighter quarantine measures. According to the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC), 13 new patients were found in Daegu, 300 kilometres southeast of Seoul. It’s presumed they contracted the illness from a 61 year old South Korean woman who was diagnosed with the virus infection yesterday.

The KCDC said yesterday that South Korea is entering a “new phase” with some confirmed cases not linked to existing spreads, meaning that those patients are judged to have contracted the COVID-19 virus without traveling abroad or coming into contact with other infected patients. The agency admitted it is not clear how some recent patients contracted the virus.

^ PR's link also says that a coronovirus "super spreader" has infected unknown quantities of people in Seoul, where she was in hospital (in contact with medical staff, who were in turn contaminated and presumably spread the infection), and she also commonly used public transport.

The country’s thhirty-first patient, thought to be a coronavirus “super spreader,” also lives in Daegu. She complained of a fever on February 10 and was tested Monday at a local health centre, and was quickly sent to a hospital and placed in quarantine. The patient visited Seoul late last month, where she was was treated in hospital following an auto accident, then returned to her everyday life, in which she often used public transport.

All newly infected people have been placed in quarantine and are undergoing treatment.

It is suggested that the inadequate quarantine measures put in place by medical authorities may bear some responsibility for the fast spread of the virus in Japan and China.

Fast, deadly spread of virus on cruise ship and in Hubei prompts questions about response
Nathan VanderKlippeAsia correspondent

A journalist reports from the quarantined Diamond Princess cruise ship docked at Daikoku Pier on Feb. 19, 2020, in Yokohama, Japan.

In the waters off Yokohama, a deadly virus infected one in five people tested aboard a cruise ship, where they had spent two weeks waiting for medical clearance to leave. In Hubei, the province at the epicentre of the COVID-19 outbreak, the virus has killed people at a rate seven times higher than elsewhere in China.

In much of the world, COVID-19 has spread relatively slowly. But the speed and severity of the outbreak in some areas has prompted specialists in China and Japan to raise new questions about the role authorities responding to the epidemic may have played in facilitating its spread.

Among the most damning accusations came from Japan, where Kento Iwata, a specialist in infectious diseases at Kobe University, described a day he spent aboard the Diamond Princess cruise ship Tuesday. He found “completely inadequate” infection-control measures, including a failure to properly separate a green zone free of the virus from a red infectious zone. “It was completely chaotic,” he said, describing a medical officer without protective gear who said she had already been infected and appeared to have given up on further measures to shield herself.

“I was so scared,” Prof. Iwata said in a video posted to YouTube, recounting a question he posed to a quarantine official: “Do you want to infect everybody in the ship?

“Everywhere could have virus, and everybody was not careful about it,” he added.

Of the confirmed cases outside China, fully 61 per cent were aboard the Diamond Princess. Hundreds of passengers disembarked Wednesday. Some are being evacuated to their home countries, including Canada.

Further questions arose with the publication Tuesday of an extensive study by Chinese researchers, who examined 72,314 patient records to glean insights into the behaviour of the virus. They found that in Hubei, 2.9 per cent of people diagnosed with the virus have died, fully seven times the rate in other Chinese provinces.

The first cases were discovered in Wuhan, the capital of Hubei, but the virus has since spread to every province and region of the country.

The far higher rate inside Hubei has prompted researchers and the sick alike to ask why.

In Hubei, “it’s pretty clear that a lot of infections have occurred within hospitals,” said Keiji Fukuda, who has held senior advisory positions at the World Health Organization and is now the director of the division of community medicine and public health practice at the University of Hong Kong. That includes at least 1,716 confirmed cases among health-care workers, according to the report by China’s Novel Coronavirus Pneumonia Emergency Response Epidemiology Team.

“Has adequate training been provided to health-care workers? Do they have the right equipment to carry it out? Did they have enough people? Or is it simply that conditions were overcrowded and so things just broke down?”

South Korea outbreak centred on church in Daegu

South Korea has recorded 31 news cases today, taking its total to 82.

The country’s disease control centre said 30 of the new cases were in the city of Daegu and surrounding Gyeongbuk province south of Seoul.

Of those, 23 are linked with the Shincheonji Church of Jesus, The Temple of the Tabernacle of the Testimony, where the a 61-year-old woman believed to be at the centre of the cluster was a worshipper. The woman is known as Patient 31 because sher was the 31st person recorded with the virus in South Korea.
It is now believed that 37 out of the 82 cases are members of the church’s congregation.

Of the remaining eight cases announced today, one is in Seoul, two are in hospital in Cheongdo Daenam hospital in Gyeongbuk. The remaning five are being investigated.

The Korean women who infected they think up to 40 church members is being called a 'Superior Carrier'. Interesting to know her role in the church.

Both Japan and Korea are possibly the new hot spots.

One thing Cambodia and Vietnam have going for them is young population. (the median age of the Cambodian population was 24 years.Jul 17, 2019). Seems older people at much greater risk.

Males seem to be showing up much higher rates than females. Smoking the likely reason.

Vietnam closed all schools till April. This could be a very smart move. Proactive to keep any outbreak manageable.

Isn’t it great the competent authorities have so far been able to stop the virus at the Vietnamese border?
Cambodia is ‘the lucky country’ with a management like that.
