The Chinese authorities have detained a prominent activist and legal scholar who issued a blistering attack on president Xi Jinping for mishandling the coronavirus crisis amid a nationwide crackdown on speech freedom.
Xu Zhiyong, a former law lecturer and founder of the social campaign New Citizens Movement, was taken away by police on Saturday evening while he was seeking refuge at the home of a lawyer in the southern city of Guangzhou, activists Ye Du and Hua Ze said.
His host Yang Bin, her husband and son were also taken away for “hiding criminals” but were released after 24 hours, they said. Yang has reportedly posted comments online demanding officials be held responsible for the whistleblower doctor Li Wenliang who died this month.

Re: Outbreak of Unidentified Coronavirus In China as New Year Approaches
This is vry bad news. One can only imagine more to follow
https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/as ... story.htmlFourteen American cruise ship passengers with coronavirus among those evacuated to the U.S
Two planes carrying 328 Americans evacuated from a coronavirus-stricken cruise liner in Japan have landed in the United States, carrying 14 people confirmed to have been infected.
Efforts are under way to trace the passengers from a second cruise ship, currently docked in Cambodia, after an American passenger tested positive for the virus.

Re: Outbreak of Unidentified Coronavirus In China as New Year Approaches
Vietnam initiated the biggest quarantine outside of China in a commune area 40km's North of Hanoi the other day, due to a number of new cases, it affects 10,000 people and is scheduled to last 20 days. Don't think I'd be recommending there on the basis of that news.Jack.R. wrote: ↑Mon Feb 17, 2020 9:56 amHopefully the weather theory holds, but I doubt.phuketrichard wrote: ↑Mon Feb 17, 2020 9:22 am ".....Japan as warm as Cambodia? Hong Kong as warm as Cambodia? Simply wrong. Different weathers in this time of year."
OK: point taken
but what about;
Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia & Singapore?
all had direct flights, all have lots of Chinese tourists this time of year, same as Cambodia, yet Camboida....No cases??
and the 20 they tested on the boat, ( out of over 1,400) that came back negative, seems one was positive...
As RT news says "question more"
About Singapore that is a whole air-conditioned/very packed country so the risk is high.
Thailand has lots of imported cases, Vietnam seems very successful with their containment, making it a good option to move there for a while if things get worse. Malaysia I didn't follow. Cambodia is most likely more at risk than Thailand or Vietnam just because of the political choices made, otherwise Cambodia could have been quite safe if they implemented Vietnam like measures.

Vietnam’s COVID-19 epicenter dogged by stigma
Monday, February 17, 2020, 17:54 GMT+7
Residents of a small commune in the epicenter of the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) epidemic in Vietnam find themselves battling a two-front war – one against the disease and the other against social stigma bordering on discrimination.
Son Loi, a commune of 10,600 people in Binh Xuyen District located in the northern province of Vinh Phuc, has been on lockdown for five days as a handful of locals have been diagnosed with COVID-19 out of Vietnam’s 16 positive cases.
Vietnam has so far confirmed 13 Vietnamese, one Vietnamese American, and two Chinese infected with the new coronavirus.
The country’s latest COVID-19 patient was announced last Thursday, the day when Son Loi was sealed off.
The patient was the sixth confirmed case in Son Loi and the 11th in Vinh Phuc.
The patients in Vinh Phuc allegedly contracted the virus from a group of eight local workers who had recently returned to Vietnam after attending a vocational training seminar in the central Chinese city of Wuhan -- ground zero for the COVID-19 outbreak.
Vinh Phuc, particularly Son Loi, has thus been labeled the epicenter of the COVID-19 epidemic in Vietnam.
Authorities began sealing off the entire commune of Son Loi on Thursday last week in a bid to contain the disease’s spread.

To prevent the spread of the coronavirus, travelers returning from Hong Kong, Thailand, Singapore and Macau must remain in home quarantine for 14 days ■ El Al takes a hit on direct flights to Thailand
Until now, those returning from those areas had to remain at home only if they showed symptoms of the virus. Travelers returning from China had already been required to remain at home for two weeks, even without symptoms. The decision was made after a situational assessment Sunday morning by Health Minister Yaakov Litzman and a team of experts.

Re: Outbreak of Unidentified Coronavirus In China as New Year Approaches
I think of the European market looking ahead to the summer school holidays July/August and the timings of their advance bookings. Surely there will be a reasonable sized impact across the main SE destinations regardless of whether they sort it out before then as they decide now to make plans closer to home.phuketrichard wrote: ↑Tue Feb 18, 2020 7:40 am how many other countries will follow?

My concern is the likelihood of Thailand and Cambodia acting too early to please their Chinese masters. In fairness to China they have been the ones enforcing restrictions and not their two principal puppets.

Chief Thani today even declined to confirm which passengers are being screened at Phuket International Airport for elevated body temperature.
“I am not allowed to give any information to the press about coronavirus updates at all. There is only the public information through the Phuket office of the Public Relations Department [PR Phuket], which receives orders from Phuket Governor Phakaphong Tavipatana only,” Chief Thanit said.
“This is by order of the Ministry of Health in Bangkok to not give out any information,” Chief Thanit added.
