Coronavirus UK: ‘Drug-dealing kingpin’ extradited from Thailand at centre of suspected outbreak at high-security jail

Thailand is Cambodia's neighbor to the West, and this forum is dedicated to Thai news, stories, reviews, blogs, videos, Thai people and anything else related to the country. A lot of expats have both lived and worked in Cambodia and Thailand, and this area is a place to discuss all aspects of life in Thailand and what's going on there. Most topics are about Bangkok and Pattaya because of their larger populations of expatriates and tourists in those cities, but this is for all things Thai.

AN alleged drug-dealing kingpin is at the centre of a suspected corona-virus outbreak at a high-security jail.

Mark Rumble, 31, arrived back in the UK on January 27 after being extradited from Thailand to face charges of conspiracy to supply class A drugs.

He collapsed in his cell at category B HMP Bullingdon, near Bicester, Oxfordshire, days later.

Tonight hundreds of inmates were confined to their cells as panic spread.

An entire wing at the jail has been shut off with three cons now being tested for the deadly disease.

Prison chiefs were tonight awaiting urgent test results on Rumble and another man — due to be completed within 24 hours.

A source said: “The jail’s been in panic mode since the first person collapsed.

“Several hundred prisoners on C-wing are in lockdown and unable to leave their cells. A prison is just about the worst place for any outbreak because everyone is in such close quart

I am not totally confident in the 33 cases in Thailand. 3300 perhaps.

A prisoner who had been transferred from a jail in Thailand and is being tested for coronavirus has been named as Mark John Rumble.

Thai authorities confirmed the identity of the 31-year-old, who was brought back to the UK on a flight two weeks ago.

He was taken HMP Bullingdon in Oxfordshire, Sky News understands.

Prisoners at the Bicester jail are now being kept in isolation in their cells, with access also restricted to the wing of the complex where they are being held.

The prison has capacity for 1,114 inmates - including those on remand, those who have been sentenced, and young adults aged 18 to 21 - and remains operational, with Public Health England on site helping to manage the situation.

As Rumble and another prisoner was being tested, the World Health Organisation (WHO) announced the illness would now be called COVID-19.

WHO director general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said the first vaccine could be ready in 18 months "so we have to do everything today using available weapons to fight this virus".

Why? They are already quarantined, in a way. Do they not have 14 days to spare?

I see it was the UK where he was facing charges and had just been hiding out in Thailand. He's been in jail since 2 November 2019. Knowing the rather overcrowded conditions in SE Asian jails a virus like that could spread like wildfire in the correctional facilities here as well. Many inmates are in poor health and Tuberculosis is rife in those packed cells.
