Cambodia now connected to Thailand by rail.
Re: Cambodia now connected to Thailand by rail.
I took the train from Kampot to Phnom Penh for my first time in Cambodia, I hope to do more journeys due to it being an excellent trip.
Train arriving on time at Kampot Station 9am. Price for the 5 hour journey is $7 for passengers and $5 for the motorbike.
Well worth the rest from the road (heat and potholes). The train carriages are air-conditioned and very comfortable.
Could not post the video, so a snap instead. I opted for a small car, we had alone for the journey.

Always "hope" but never "expect".

Re: Cambodia now connected to Thailand by rail.
Cambodia News, Banteay Meanchey province: Two days ago, HE Sun Chanthol led a delegation of ministries and experts to promote the implementation of Poipet train station.
The authorities are preparing Cambodia's rail link with Thailand for the purpose of enhancing the area for tourism, promoting trade, and facilitating the transportation between both countries.
It should be recalled that the Northern Railway of Cambodia, linking the capital city Phnom Penh with Poipet on the 386-kilometer Cambodian-Thai border, was restored by the Royal Government of Cambodia by the end of 2018.

Re: Cambodia now connected to Thailand by rail.
That's not true, the two countries were only connected by rail in 1942, after Thailand took control of the western and northern provinces of Cambodia. It was cut off after they returned the provinces in 1946. That's 74 years ago.Cambodian Prime Minister HE and his Thai counterpart Prayut Chan-o-cha, in April last year, presided over the inauguration ceremony on the reconnected railroad network more than 40 years since the route stopped. The agreement on joint railway traffic and the connection of our railroads again after they were separated in 1974 because of the war, will improve railroad transportation, which is an effective, cheap and safe transportation method, authorities said.

This was at the same time that the Thai allies - the Japanese - were subjecting our allied POWs to the most inhumane treatment that POWs have received anywhere. Building the Thailand - Burma railway.
ps, with full knowledge, approval and assistance from the Thais.
Does anybody know if any allied POWs ever worked on the Thailand - Cambodia railroad?
(Google search is just snowed with Burma Railway stories, and tourist trips to Burma railway sites that also include Cambodia)

Think you'll find that the Japanese were much worse to the Chinese than Western POWs.SternAAlbifrons wrote: ↑Tue Feb 11, 2020 4:13 pmThat is interesting.John Bingham wrote: ↑Tue Feb 11, 2020 3:27 pmThat's not true, the two countries were only connected by rail in 1942, after Thailand took control of the western and northern provinces of Cambodia. Re: Cambodia now connected to Thailand by rail.
Ok so I took the train maybe a year or two ago and it went from Bangkok to the Cambodian border which was fantastic and then I took a bus to siem reap .and first time as with the train and was absolutely fantastic and really very cheap couldn't believe it (much better then doing those bus journeys and hassle) anyway as regarding this train scenario I've read all the posts and it's a bit of an old post by the looks of it and nothing seems very clear
So have they finally built the train line going all the way to Phnom Penh? not that it would be a quick trip, and I kind of agree with p/richard saying it's better to fly (probably is if to pp is where you really want to go) but most tourists will quite happily split up with siem reap obviously to see cambodia's most important sites ,before travelling onwards to p/phen it'll certainly be of use to some people but not all

More than just any old backpacker.
