Hadlek (Koh Kong) visa run.

Post by Equinix »

Went to Koh kong for a new visa and the Khmer helpers asked me how long I would stay in Thailand... I said 20 min or so (time to drink a beer). They said that's not possible. They changed the rules last month and you'll have to stay one night minimum.

Has anyone here recently tried to go back an hour or so later? Already got a room in Koh kong and would just like to go back.

People doing the reverse are able to pay a 100 Baht service fee and go back the same day. Should be possible your way.

I go thru there often and have never seen any Khmer helpers. There is a guy on the Thai side who gives out the cards who is helpful.

Not anymore since few months. And it was not 100 but 300 at least.

Now it seems that more and more Thai customs at Khmer borders do not want to let people go and come back the same day, or they sometimes accept if you pay 2000.

Yes, exactly, a new scam on the Thai side ! it started from Poipet and is now spreading to all Thai borders.

Check the axxholes website Thaivisa if you want to understand that what I am saying is the exact truth. Latest reports are just few weeks old and I personally know 1 guy turned down 10 days ago.

There are a few, but the short, well dressed, really polite one is the boss, and the best.
Works on the Thai side but lives in Koh Kong.

I met him first when he was kid, now married with kids himself.
If he gets to like you, and respect you, he can be an enormous help.
No specifics, and no idea what he can or cannot do for anybody else, but he has helped me do things the rule book seem to say you can't. Nothing big.
NB, not a bent scammer so don't treat him that way. just very very helpful if he likes you.

In any case, get him to fill in your form and tip him a dollar.
Nice guy, and he will remember you next time.

There seems to be a competition along the Thai/Cambodia border about who can be the most corrupt.

100% correct. This guy helped me a lot when I first went in with my Vietnam bike. Now he parks the bike for me.

Instead of trying to go back the same day, I had some beers at a food stall and did some work online... Got a bungalow 5 min from the border and went back 6am the next morning...

The Khmer guy issuing the visa's tried to scam me for $5 but when I made clear I've been here before and I won't pay an extra $5 it went pretty smooth.

Used to be an easy border crossing. Sounds like it has gone the same way as others. Might be time to give Thailand a complete miss.

Possibly, unfortunately I would need a visa for Vietnam.
