New rule allows growth of cannabis plants

Thailand is Cambodia's neighbor to the West, and this forum is dedicated to Thai news, stories, reviews, blogs, videos, Thai people and anything else related to the country. A lot of expats have both lived and worked in Cambodia and Thailand, and this area is a place to discuss all aspects of life in Thailand and what's going on there. Most topics are about Bangkok and Pattaya because of their larger populations of expatriates and tourists in those cities, but this is for all things Thai.

The Cabinet has agreed to the removal of cannabis from the narcotic list under an approved ministerial regulation of the Public Health Ministry, said Traisulee Traisaranakul, Deputy Government Spokesperson, on Tuesday (January 28).

The regulation states that researches would be conducted on the effects of cannabis in medicines, cosmetics, and herbs in line with government's policy to boost the country's production competitiveness.

“Preliminary, this regulation allows the cultivation of cannabis plants by individuals and corporation, subject to the conditions on trade and possession ” Traisulee explained.

“The regulation also states that cannabis plants can be grown at the maximum of one rai per household” she said, adding that “Growers must be licensed, and grow only species specified in the new regulation”.

It's not intended for growing cannibis. Licenses for one rai will only be granted for species of hemp plants with less than 0.3 THC.

One rai is a lot, but the license of growing cannabis will surely be granted only to pharmaceutical companies or cosmetic ones for making their products. Don't think that any person will be able to get such a license, grow cannabis in his backyard, and after that sell it. I am sure that all the cannabis that such people will grow will be strictly monitored so that it won't be sold in another state where cannabis is illegal or delivered to another country. But with this new cannabis rule, the price of weed will surely decrease, I don't know how good it will be for big companies that sell cannabis, but for us simple customers this is excellent.
