Would you ever accept to appear in a Khmer commercial?

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. Would you ever accept to appear in a Khmer commercial?

Post by Bitte_Kein_Lexus »

This is something I've been wondering about for a while... We've all seen those cheesy Ganzberg commercials or seen the odd Khmer music video with a white dude in it (usually as the guy who marries a girl, much to the chagrin on the Khmer villager who loves her). The other day I also saw a few white guys at Aeon mall being “judges” at a cocktail-tasting event. They had obviously been paid to be there and act as “experts”. They would taste one flavour, then scribble some nonsense on a little piece of paper. They then watched on with a hint of boredom as a guy did bartender tricks in front of them (and the crowd), flipping the bottles around. I couldn't help but wonder: would I ever accept to play part in something like that?

Part of me (maybe 5%) would want to act in one just for shits and giggles. I mean, friends back home would find it hilarious. However, my friends here would probably never let me live it down, so I doubt I could ever accept to play in a Khmer commercial or music video. I also don't like the idea of being a public figure of sorts. So how about you? Would you ever accept stardom here by saying you like Phnom Penh beer on TV, or playing some dopey guy who steals a villager's fiancée in a music video?

In a heartbeat, just for the comedic value to all of my friends back home, lol.

A call for paid actors was announced on a FB forum the other day - specifically middle aged westerners. Thought about it, and then went back to moving house. I was a stage actor for a while, and worked behind a studio camera for a media company, thought this would be fun.

Why not? Hell, my whole family appeared in a rather scandalous, 2 page fictitious piece in a Khmer tabloid magazine without permission so why would I object to a trashy ad.

Yeah, but only if I get to say, "get off my tits!"
As my old Cajun bait seller used to say, "I opes you luck.

I was an extra in a French movie that was filmed here.
I also appeared on the news giving alms to monks at a temple on Choy Changwa on KNY.

A friend offered me a part in a beer advert once but I couldn't be bothered to drive all the way across town with no notice (he called me on the day of filming).
Scarier than malaria.

LoL. Was almost in one a few months back. They changed the day and I couldn't be bothered.

There was recently a real bad review on a Facebook group of how they wasted the time of some European girl, getting her to waste hours driving back and forth for the day. Sounded like a circus.

The girls keep telling me 'you hansum man, saart klang', but I just don't think I'd get a gig unless it was a porno or hair restoration kareem.

Really?!? Hahaha. I just remembered I was actually featured in a commercial whithout knowing it. I personally never saw it, but I saw the brochures I was in (brought back a few copies to show my family back in the west).

Ganzberg was looking for some western promo girls the other day. Pay didn't seem awesome considering the long hours:
