Re: Outbreak of Unidentified Coronavirus In China as New Year Approaches

Flew from Phnom Penh to Bangkok last night, and loads of Chinese in the plane.

I may have missed one or two, but it seemed to me all were wearing masks. I know those masks help a bit to keep the small dust particles out (pollution) but viruses?

Washing your hands several times a day is probably more effective... Any expert?

Coronavirus: Three Chinese Cities On Lockdown And Beijing Cancels Lunar New Year Events To Prevent Spread
Isabel Togoh
Topline: Three Chinese cities—Wuhan, Huanggang and Ezhou—are now on lockdown as authorities seek to contain a rapidly-spreading pneumonia-like virus, leaving some 20 million people stuck within the restricted zones.

Authorities in Wuhan, the city at the center of the deadly coronavirus outbreak, suspended transport networks and outgoing flights in a bid to contain the deadly illness. The government is telling the city’s 11 million citizens not to travel after at least 17 people have died and 634 were infected.
Taiwan’s China Air suspended flights into Wuhan, while the city’s trains, subways, shuttle buses and ferries were suspended on Thursday until further notice.
Huanggang, a city of more than 7 million people located 75km from Wuhan, has had its transport network suspended. Nearby Ezhou, with a population of 1 million, closed its railway station.
Beijing has now cancelled major new year temple fairs which bring out large crowds and could raise chances of the illness spreading. Authorities in China have advised citizens against spending time in crowd and public places, while a number of film releases slated for the holiday season, which is a busy time for cinemas, have been suspended.
The lockdown was imposed around a month after the first cases of the illness were reported, and comes just a days ahead of tens of millions of people traveling across China to spend the Lunar New Year holiday with family.

There are fears that individuals who are unknowingly infected may pass on the coronavirus, as the incubation period is up to two weeks. Cases have been reported in other Chinese cities and now internationally in Thailand, the U.S., South Korea, Taiwan and Japan.
Researchers say that the number of cases could be much higher than Chinese authorities are reporting. Imperial College London scientists say some 4,000 people could be infected in Wuhan alone.

Earlier this week, several countries including the U.S., U.K. and Australia said they were screening all flights from Wuhan. The U.K.’s business minister Andrea Leadsom warned on Thursday that the coronavirus is a “huge concern for the world.”
The Shanghai Composite Index fell 2.7% and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index dropped 1.52% on fears that the virus would impact travel, tourism and retail stocks. China’s yuan reached a two-week low on Thursday.

What to watch for: The World Health Organization convened a meeting of experts in Geneva on Wednesday, with the meeting set to resume on Thursday. Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus urged China to take actions to limit the spread of the coronavirus internationally.

Now that the Chinese capital has taken such a measure, it won't be long before the whole nation will cancel New Year festivities.
Something tells me the authorities in China are much more concerned than they appear to be.

Not an expert, but from my understanding those surgical masks do fuck all against viruses. You need a N100 or P100 respirator mask that at the very least seals around your mouth and nose. For real projection it needs to be full face because viruses can enter through your eyes.

The cheap ones go for $10, full face over $100.

Cheapest option is wash your hands and don't touch your face.

China increasing its shutdowns of cities.

The question is for how long?

Shares in airlines, hotels and casinos in Asia will take a hit.

Is this 'a perfect storm' for Sihanoukville. The closing of online gambling would have the casinos trying to survive only with Chinese punters through the doors.

Now this may well dry up if travel restrictions continue over a longer period of time.

The latest from Reuters News Agency.

The latest on the coronavirus spreading in China and beyond

3 Min Read

(Reuters) - An outbreak of a new coronavirus that began in the central Chinese city of Wuhan has killed 18 people and infected around 650 globally.

The virus has caused alarm because it is still too early to know just how dangerous it is and how easily it spreads between people. And because it is new, humans have not been able to build any immunity to it.

Here is what we know so far:

- Chinese state television reported on Thursday there were 634 cases in China. Authorities have confirmed 18 deaths.

- The previously unknown strain is believed to have emerged late last year from illegally traded wildlife at an animal market in Wuhan.

- Thailand has reported four cases, Japan and Vietnam two apiece, and South Korea, Taiwan, Singapore and the United States one each. A second possible case was being tested in the United States and the BBC reported five people being tested in Scotland. Patients in these cases were either residents of Wuhan or recent visitors to the city.

- The World Health Organization said on Thursday that while the outbreak was an emergency for China and the agency was tracking the evolution ‘every minute’, it was not yet a global health emergency.

- Symptoms include fever, cough and difficulty breathing.

- China says the virus is mutating and that there is evidence of respiratory transmission.

- Those most affected are older people and those with underlying health conditions.

- Three research teams are to start work on developing potential vaccines, the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations said. The plan is to have at least one potential vaccine in clinical trials by June.

- Preliminary research suggests the virus was passed to humans from snakes, but Chinese government medical adviser Zhong Nanshan has also identified badgers and rats as possible sources.

- Wuhan, a city of 11 million people, is on lockdown, with urban transport shut and outgoing flights suspended.

- Nearby Huanggang, a city of 7 million people, is suspending public transport and closing public venues, including movie theatres and internet cafes.

- Beijing closed tourist access to the Forbidden City and cancelled large gatherings, including two Lunar New Year temple fairs.

- Airports around the world have stepped up screening of passengers who have travelled to China.

- Equities markets around the world fell on Thursday, led by the biggest decline in Chinese stocks in more than eight months, as concern mounted about the spread of the virus. [MKTS/GLOB]

24 Jan 2020
The Cambodian Ministry of Health has denied alarmist rumors circulating on Khmer social media that suggest the coronavirus disease, originating from Wuhan, China, has now been detected in Sihanoukville.

No Wuhan Virus Detected at Sihanoukville, Cambodia’s Health Ministry Confirms
24/01/20 08:47
Phnom Penh (FN), Jan. 23 – Secretary of State at Health Ministry Or Vandin dismissed a fake news spread on Facebook, claiming that Wuhan has entered Cambodia through Sihanoukville International Airport.

Vandin appeals to the public not to trust information from Facebook source, but wait for the updates from the Ministry of Health.

"At this moment, there is not a single case of pneumonia detected in Cambodia. The only trusted source regarding the new virus must be from the Ministry of Health,” Vandin told Fresh News on Thursday.

TO LATE>>>>>

China missed a golden chance to curb Wuhan virus
A total of 300,000 people reportedly left Wuhan on Wednesday and could carry the virus to other Chinese cities
The Chinese government failed to act quickly enough to curb the spread of the Wuhan virus, risking further outbreaks, a Hong Kong-based Chinese virologist has said.
The latest measures by the Wuhan government – forbidding its citizens from leaving the city – came too late and would not help stop the virus spreading, Guan Yi, the Director of the State Key Laboratory of Emerging Infectious Diseases and the Center of Influenza Research,
