Two Men Arrested for Poaching 109 Parrots

Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

Send them down to me please.

You know i am a human rights softie
So I will only murder the bastards by lecture.

Actually, it's a bit sad in a way.
These guys are possibly only doing what they were bought up to believe was a good thing - providing.
Probably very little input on the reasons for the laws.
And almost certainly no input on the wider conservation context.
In an earlier time they maybe would have been respected as fit young successful hunters.

But for now, we'll just have to murder the bastards by lecture I guess.

(I know i've got it in me, in fact i've probably done it before, right here on ceo)
My Nan had an African Grey called Biggles. Even back in the day was 800 quid.

He used to perfectly imitate a knock at the door. Lost count over the times he had me over. The phone too. Snippets of people talking.

Happy these are back in the wild.

In the years I have been birding in Cambodia, I have seen a huge decline in parrot numbers. Seeing hundreds or even thousands at ATT was fairly easy. Alas, no more.

When not far up the river from Phnom Penh, on De Lagrée's French Mekong Expedition, 1866-68
Henri Mouhot, the legendary naturalist and cultural explorer, wrote words to the effect of,

"We must build a stockade every night from strong logs, due to the pestilence of elephants tigers and rhinoceros"

Oh what a pestilence to have...

footnote, not reliable.
I read somewhere, in my early days here, that during the 1990's, with the Cardamoms just opening up after 25 years of depopulation - the Tiger Eats Person figures were the highest ever recorded in modern history.
Never seen that statement again. But i do do know there were a shit load of tigers in there, as late as that.
And ALL gone by 2006/7

I've a friend who owns a farm which harbours a breeding ground of red-tailed black cockatoos in a small thatch of salmon gums. Wildlife officers have installed motion sensor cameras, regularly drop in during tourist season, take yearly data during nesting periods and generally ensure the area is preserved. Every few years there's a bust of wildlife smugglers who are invariably of Asian decent.
