To calculate the prices of international schools, we used the whole price of a full term for one 6-year old child, excluding once-off costs such as enrollment fees, application fees, etc. Only those cities with 7 or more international schools, and with prices publicly available representing at least 25% of the schools in the city, were used in this article.

All prices were converted from the local currency into USD using the exchange rate valid on November 26th 2019. Prices for schools used in this research were gathered on the same date. There may be additional international schools in the cities discussed in this research that have not been included, because their data was not made available to us.

The first thing that immediately stands out from our data is Chinese prices. China is home to the top three most expensive cities for international schooling in Asia - Beijing’s prices start at over $8,000 per year, Shanghai at just under $5,000 and Shenzhen at over $11,000. Prices finish at $41,000, $39,000 and $32,000 respectively.

The fourth Chinese city in the list, Guanghzhou, also makes it into the top 10 most expensive cities in the world with a range of $11,231 to $29,818 per year.

However, comparatively affordable options can still be found in Asia. Out of the 19 cities included in our research, 10 of them have starting prices of $5,000 per year or less; Hanoi, Kyoto-Osaka-Kobe, Shanghai, Ho Chi Minh City, Singapore, Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, Manila, Jakarta and Phnom Penh.

Phnom Penh is in fact the most affordable city in Asia for international education, and the only city with a minimum price of under $2,000.

Bangkok and Jakarta, despite being in different countries, have remarkably similar prices. In Jakarta school prices range from $2,339 to $30,075, while in Bangkok, the range is only slightly higher with a minimum of $2,516 and a maximum of $31,125.

Phnom Penh also has a different definition of "international school" than all the others.

ISPP is still north of 20k (22?) last time I checked, so is it's major competitor. 2k/year barely gets you public education if you count the tutoring that's basically necessary in public high schools (1-2k/yr). Cheapest high schools that could even somewhat be called "international" here are 5k+/yr and the majority will still be inferior to most public high schools in the west. There are a lot more options here than just a few years ago, which is great, but the article is comparing apples to oranges.

Most public high schools in the west? That's a very broad statement. Where I'm from, there is a HUGE difference between public schools located north and south of the 8 freeway. South = jail. North = Ivy League.
That being said, 5k a year to be as educated as a donkey? That's ludicrous.

exactly, which decent international school is <$2k?
ISPP is $20k+, the next tier is around $10k, and everything else worth considering is $5k+

I agree that the survey is nonsense. However it's rather annoying when posters who know absolutely nothing about education here feel like putting in their vapid opinions. Sure, we send our kids to school just so they can be "as educated as donkeys".

Cambodia has produced so many Nobel prize recipients, hasn't it? Unless you're forking out $20k a year or have enrolled your kids at the French school near the US embassy, don't expect your kids to ever become the head of Berkshire Hathaway. Get real.
