Sihanoukville: At 9:35 pm on December 9, 2019, a TOYOTA HIACE van from the Vireath Butham transport company crashed into a motorcycle on National Road 4 between Kilometer Rd 181-182 in Samrong Kandal village, Prey Nup district, Preah Sihanouk province.

The white van, license plate Phnom Penh 2AK-2340, was heading from Phnom Penh to Sihanoukville when it hit the 24-year-old male motorcyclist, killing him at the scene. The Virak Buntham driver, who has not been identified, immediately got out of the van and ran away.

How would illegally logged timber be moved across the country if that happened?

Do transport companies encourage their drivers to do a runner if they are involved in an accident?

What pressures are these guys facing? What's the worst that could happen if they stayed at the scene and cooperated with police?

It's unfortunate that runners are so
common in the KOW. I had a NGO Khmer driver smash into the side of my car. Immediately backed up and drove away. I followed him for a few kilometers and video taped the incident. The NGO and police were not interested in any follow up whatsoever. Made my claim with my insurance company. Luckily, we both had infinity, and my deductible was waived. Bottom line is that nobody even cared that the driver left the scene of a somewhat major collision without penalty or remorse whatsoever. Bake a pie, eat a pie.
