An impressive performance by the Cambodian football team has put them through to the semi-finals.

Cambodia Qualify for SEA Games Semi-Final
By: Editor, December 5, 2019 9:59 am

Cambodia qualified for their first-ever SEA Games semi-final at the 2019 edition in the Philippines, thanks to a remarkable 3-1 win over Malaysia.

Prior to the match, Cambodia sat level on points with both Malaysia and the Philippines, with their hopes of pulling off an unlikely upset seeming slim. The tournaments’ hosts had no issue in dispatching Timor Leste 6-1, in a resounding victory which seemed to confirm their passage to the knockout stage.

However, the Angkor Warriors kicked things into gear at the start of the second half of their game against the heavy favorites. Midfielder In Sodavid opened the scoring for Cambodia in the 56th minute and was soon followed by rising star striker Sieng Chanthea, as the 17-year-old forward netted his second goal of the tournament just a minute later.

The remarkable result was wrapped up in the 68th minute when experienced over-age player Keo Sokpheng added a third. Malaysia scored a consolation goal through half-Australian midfielder Quentin Cheng, currently in the academy of Australian side Central Coast Mariners, but it was ultimately too little too late for Harimau Malaya.

In the end, the scoreline turned out to be incredibly significant, as Cambodia were able to secure passage on goal difference – having scored just one more than the Philippines and conceding the same number.

2019 SEA Games: Cambodia’s medal tally climbs to 21
Cambodia’s medal tally in the 2019 Southeast Asian Games climbed after a series of bronze-medal wins in arnis.
Image
From 13, Cambodia’s medal tally jumped to 21 after it won eight more bronze between December 2 and 3. Cambodia did not win any medal yesterday.

All of the eight new medals for Cambodia came from arnis. So far, arnis has produced all of Cambodia’s medals except for one silver that the sepak takraw (men) team won. Cambodia’s sole gold medal so far also came from arnis.

Four of the eight arnis bronze medals that were added to the latest tally are courtesy of Eng Sou Mala and Chhem Sila. Eng placed third in both the traditional and non-traditional anyo categories (women), while Chhem took the bronze in the men’s side of the same arnis categories.

Despite the increased medal tally, Cambodia’s ranking among participating countries actually went down. From being number seven three days ago, Cambodia slid to the ninth spot just ahead of Laos and the still medal-less Timor-Leste

Cambodia’s medal haul is expected to increase in the coming days when the final matches for the other disciplines where it is strong, including petanque and taekwondo, will be played. Many matches were also rescheduled due to Typhoon Kammuri, which hit the Philippines this week.

Except in arnis and sepak takraw, the first five days of the SEA Games did not go well for the Cambodia delegation.

The Cambodian baseball team opened its SEA Games campaign on a losing note after a 12-0 drubbing by host Philippines during their game at Clark Field on Dec 3.

The indoor volleyball team (men), meanwhile, lost its opening match to the Philippines at the Philsport Arena in Pasig on a score of 29-27, 25-17, 25-17

The result in indoor hockey was much better, where Cambodia’s women team drew its opening game versus Singapore yesterday, 3-3. This performance is particularly impressive given that Singapore has one of the best indoor hockey teams in Southeast Asia.

Cambodia and Myanmar battle for third place today

Despite the heartbreaking loss to Vietnam last Saturday, Cambodia still has a chance to redeem itself and bring home a medal as it battles Myanmar today for third place in men’s football in the 2019 Southeast Asian Games.

The Cambodia versus Myanmar will start 3pm (Cambodia time) at Rizal Memorial Stadium.

Cambodia is coming off a 4-0 loss to Vietnam, while Myanmar is still smarting from a 4-2 defeat at the hands of the Indonesians.

Myanmar is the slight favorite to win after it beat Cambodia, 2-1, in the group stage. In that game, Cambodia pulled ahead in the first half before Myanmar mounted a comeback and scored the next two goals to top Group A.

Cambodia will have a strong chance of beating Myanmar only if mainstays Sieng Chanthea and Keo Sokpheng recover from a lackluster performance against Vietnam, which drubbed Cambodia, 4-0, in the semifinals. The duo, which has terrorised opposing teams with their slick movements, went scoreless against Vietnam.
