E-sports - international tournament:
Fortnite World Cup kicks off with $30m at stake
Players as young as 12 will compete in the event, marking Fortnite: Battle Royale’s entry into the lucrative professional games tournament circuit
Keith Stuart
Fri 26 Jul 2019
After 10 weeks of open qualifiers attracting more than 40 million competitors, the Fortnite World Cup finals will be held this weekend in New York. Up for grabs for the 100 qualifiers – many of whom are between 12 and 16 years old – is a total prize pot of $30m, the largest ever for an esports event.

With more than 250 million players, Fortnite: Battle Royale has become one of the most popular video games in the world since its launch in 2017. The World Cup represents the title’s entry into the lucrative world of professional games tournament circuits, where revenues are set to pass $1bn this year, due to exploding sponsorship, advertising and broadcast rights.

Epic Games has arranged a three-day festival around the finals, with thousands of fans expected to attend. Saturday will see the Duos final with 50 teams of two competing, while Sunday features the Solo competition, pitching 100 players against each other. Both finals are played over six matches, with points awarded for match placement and number of kills. Winners of the Solo and Duo finals will receive $3m each.

Competitors are coming from all over the world after winning a series of open, online heats, which also offered hundreds of thousands of dollars in prize money. There are no women among the finalists, and most competitors are under the age of 20. Many are part of professional gaming teams such as Faze, Envy and NRG, which provide managers and training facilities for star players.

Several UK competitors will be present, including one of the favourites to win, Benjy “Benjyfishy” David Fish, who is competing in the Solo and Duo competitions for NRG Esports. The 15-year-old told ESPN that if he wins, he will buy a house for his family.

Fortnite: Battle Royale has had unprecedented growth since its release as a free offshoot of coop shooter game, Fortnite: Save the World. In each online match, 100 players are parachuted on to a colourful island and must search for weapons and items while shooting competitors. The last person standing wins.

Esports levels up with SEA Games debut
AFP
Dec 06, 2019

Esports took a step into the sporting mainstream on Thursday as it made its debut at the South-East Asian Games, becoming a medal event for the first time at an Olympic-recognised multi-sport competition.

As the typhoon-hit Games, spread across dozens of venues in the northern Philippines, neared the halfway stage, esports made its grand entrance at a darkened arena in Manila.

It represents progress for video gaming, which was a demonstration sport at last year's Asian Games but has been left off the programme for the next edition in 2022.

Players from nine countries are competing over six days for medals in Mobile Legends, Arena Of Valor, Dota 2, Starcraft II, Tekken 7 and Hearthstone.

Lack of inclusiveness: A challenge to the growth of Esports
In the past, electronic sports (Esports) was something only a few people in this country knew or heard about.

But things have changed. With the advent of the electronic age, Esports have become a part of the Cambodian identity. There are increasingly more people here that are involved with Esports one way or the other.

The Cambodian Esports scene, while not as vibrant as the ones we see in the Philippines, Malaysia, or Thailand, is developing quickly.

There are many reasons for that. One good reason is that the multi-billion-dollar global Esports industry is seen by many experts as one way that can help further develop the Cambodian economy. It is a potential that is waiting to be tapped.

Estimates put the number of gamers in Cambodia at more than two million. And the number keeps growing as more opportunities open up in the sector.

This growth is helped by the fact that many Cambodians now have access or own smartphones, iPhones and other electronic devices. Access to the Internet also contributed heavily to the promotion and development of Esports. According to the Telecommunications Regulator of Cambodia, there are now 15.8 million internet users in Cambodia, representing 98.5 percent of the population.

The proliferation of Esports has led to other developments like the creation of the Esports Federation of Cambodia (EFC). Cambodia has also started sending teams and is doing well in international Esports competitions.
