Re: The concept of bad language
Pieman made a friend with a Khmer, Pieman introduced his Khmer friend to his American friend. Pieman says his Khmer friend stole his phone and is responsible for his American friends death.explorer wrote: ↑Fri Nov 29, 2019 12:03 pmThat is one of the sad things about some people in Western society.hunter8 wrote: ↑Fri Nov 29, 2019 11:44 am It’s ok. I don’t believe in friendship unless it’s been running from the time both friends went to kindergarten together. Especially I don’t believe in friendship between a westerner and asian locals. But i noticed the word “friend” is used often in SEA for any person one occasionally would chat with longer than 5 minutes.
Cambodian friends often care about each other a lot. They share their food, and help each other when the need arises. If you make friends with good Cambodian people, they will be really good friends.
True friends are few and far between in this world and with the advent of social media, the internet and cable TV they are getting fewer and farther between.
Past generations were agrarian, they relied on each other, shared good and bad times together and did not have outside interests and influences. Today regardless of one's outlook on life, one can find a community of similar minded people on the internet and TV.
Because one has the ability to share with another friendship blossoms, however that sharing rarely includes life's difficulties. The ability to share one's problems is what tempers a friendship just as heat tempers steel.
Today one may a circle of friends one has never met in person. To suggest one nationality makes good friends and another does not is a massive pile of shyte. What makes friends is trust, loyalty and respect. 3 things that do not happen quickly and are fragile. Oddly the same three things are the foundation of a good marriage

There are good Cambodian people, you can make good friends with. There are also Cambodians you are better off avoiding.
But over all, Cambodians often have close friendships. If you become friends with these people, they can be good friends with you too.

You are right.John Bingham wrote:What does it mean then? As far as I ever knew it means fuck. Joy my means fuck your mother or something close. I hear all sorts, even old ladies saying it.
The word probably wouldn't have as much stigma here though. Bad language isn't really so much of a thing.
We would have normal language, edgy language and bad language.
Here I think there wouldn't be the same distinction - maybe just normal and rude/edgy.
Probably largely an eduction thing.

Much of explorers lessons are not about living in Cambodia. They are just about being a human being.explorer wrote:There are good Cambodian people, you can make good friends with. There are also Cambodians you are better off avoiding.

There are good people and bad people, it's good to know good people. It's bad to know bad people.
Good people are good. Bad people are not good.

There are cultural differences. It is just a matter of how well people understand them.khmerhamster wrote: ↑Fri Nov 29, 2019 12:44 pm Much of explorers lessons are not about living in Cambodia. They are just about being a human being.
One cultural difference: Westerners are often more independent. Cambodians often have closer families and closer friends.

Re: The concept of bad language
So if I understand you, there are Cambodians that are good tb be friends with and there are Cambodians that are not. I am Australian and the same is true here I belive. I also share with my friends, often we eat at each other's house, drink a beer or smoke a joint together. No money needs to change hands unless of course we go out to eat or drink and then the bill is shared equally. I fail to see what it is that you feel makes Cambodian friends better than Australian friends or in any way differentexplorer wrote: ↑Fri Nov 29, 2019 12:03 pmThat is one of the sad things about some people in Western society.hunter8 wrote: ↑Fri Nov 29, 2019 11:44 am It’s ok. yeah not sure what Explorer is trying to get at by saying it doesnt mean the word fuck, ចុយ - Joy = Fuck (as in the vulgar form of sex), Joy Knea - fuck together, Joy Mae - Mother fucker, Joy Kduay - Fucking Cunt,
in the west, peoples ears are sensitive due to "censorship" TV/Radio "watershed" and what the west deems appropriate in a civilised society,
"Swearwords" here might be less taboo and more based on context, if you say "Joy Mai" because you stubbed your toe, chances are no one will batter an eyelid, but if you shout "Joy Mai" to someones face, shits gonna kick off, you can make the word even worse by adding "Aah/Mii" in front of it

Thanks for clarifying that Jamie. I was wondering why it didn't get an answer, but I wasn't surprised. It seems some people here are not the experts they purport to be.
Silence, exile, and cunning.

Re: The concept of bad language
Yeah right, so khmers living in their own country should check english, chinese, russian, spanish et al pronunciation before naming their kids? An arrogant and demeaning comment to make imo.
You've given 1 positive reason and 3 negative ones to learn khmer. Hmmmm....
I said in another thread I think you could take your western hat off more often coz this type of thinking where you compare western values and standards to a developing Asian country smacks of hypocrisy in my book. It must be depressing I think for one to constantly be doing this comparison and identifying all the ways the khmers and Cambodia doesn't come up to scratch.. It must be sad and disheartening to see these differences with a view to expectations that khmers should be better. That must lead to anxiety and unhappiness to have that viewpoint notwithstanding that I read that you are helping some families with education.
I wonder too whether that makes it difficult to live here if one has that sort of mindset. Yes, I sometimes have a 'bad' day where I get frustrated with living here for a variety of reasons and then later, in a better mood, I think of all the advantages of living here and how generally good natured khmers are and friendly to foreigners being here and think I'm lucky to be here. I guess it's all a question of viewpoint..
As others have said, I don't see how this is any different than elsewhere.
Again, comparing with the west...do the differences need to be stated? Unless you feel comparing Cambodia with the west is like apples and apples..explorer wrote: ↑Fri Nov 29, 2019 11:56 am A lot of things we consider unacceptable, Cambodians consider acceptable.
Many Cambodians burn rubbish, including plastic. In the West we wouldn't do that.
Cambodians don't care. They burn when they feel like burning. It is often a time of the day when a lot of people are around, and have to breathe the smoke. They just do what they feel like. They don't think about others.
Khmers don't think and care about others you say? See the next point..
Disputing the earlier point above?
Last week some members were challenging you with regards to the disparaging attitude to khmers... Based on this thread alone...I have to say I concur. As I said before in another thread and to summarise.. 'this is Asia'. If one can't adapt to the environment and resorts to undue criticism then I think they are not being realistic.
