Locals and Foreigners Pitch in to Clean Up Koh Rong Samloen
Cambodia News (Sihanoukville): Trash is an environmental problem at any resort or tourist places, but the problem is acute for those living and working on an island. Following the decision to stop the trash transfer service from Koh Rong Samloen to the mainland, many people are concerned about the build up of trash which destroys the island's beauty.
A local youth group assisted by foreigners took the welcome initiative of cleaning up the island. There is a lot of junk that gets washed up on the sea shore as well as a lot of rubbish scattered in the forest inland.
Well done to the volunteers.

Obviously since it got thrown there or deposited by the waves. I feel that people in Cambodia are very careless and throw garbage away without thinking about how it affects the environment and image of the country. They should be ashamed because they don't care about the country - just themselves.
Silence, exile, and cunning.

Normal for this time of year.
The rainy season washes heaps of garbage into the Gulf, and the SW monsoon washes it straight onto the cambodian coastline.
Dry season, when the wind is off-shore, the beaches are much cleaner.
Most probably, from my observations and summations, much of this rubbish comes from Bangkok.
Local initiatives like this are great - but the problem needs addressing at local, national and regional levels.
I do hold hope. eg, When my family arrived in Australia in the '60's it did not look too much different from Cambodia today.
Education education education, public shaming and hefty fines would do the trick here too.

Give someone a pencil and paper,,, and guess what they will do with them.
Give them a rubbish bin , and then you will find out what they will do with it.
Now, if only we had some rubbish bins on the streets we could find out.

Cambodia,,,, Don't fall in love with her.
Like the spoilt child she is, she will not be happy till she destroys herself from within and breaks your heart.
