Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

UN Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination to review Cambodia, Colombia, Ireland, Israel, and Uzbekistan

GENEVA (22 November 2019) — The UN Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination will meet in Geneva from 25 November to 13 December 2019 to review Cambodia, Colombia, Ireland, Israel, and Uzbekistan.

The above are among the 182 States parties to the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination, and thus are required to undergo regular reviews on how they are implementing the Convention as well as the Committee’s previous recommendations.

The Committee will hold dialogues with delegations from the respective governments and be briefed by NGOs, national human rights institutions and independent monitoring frameworks. The Committee will also continue its work regarding the inter-state communications submitted to it in 2018.

The public sessions will take place in the Ground Floor Conference Hall of Palais Wilson in Geneva. A full schedule of meetings is available online here.

The sessions will be Webcast live at http://webtv.un.org/live, and the recommended hashtag for the meeting is #CERD100.

More information about the session, including reports submitted by the States, is available on the session Webpage. Information is also available regarding media accreditation.

The Committee is scheduled to publish its findings on the respective States, known as concluding observations, on 13 December 2019, here.

Background

The Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination monitors States parties’ adherence to the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination. The Committee is made up of 18 members who are independent human rights experts drawn from around the world, who serve in their personal capacity and not as representatives of States parties. The Committee’s concluding observations are an independent assessment of States’ compliance with their human rights obligations under the treaty.
