That's why salaries are so low in Cambodia. People are prepared to work for very little.

How much employers are prepared to pay, is largely determined by how much previous employees were prepared to work for. If you work for food and accommodation, the next employee may be expected to do the same.

Some people in teaching jobs have been working for very little. Next you'll be asking why teachers salaries are so low.

Good sir, you may have misunderstood my intentions.

I intend on looking for credible teaching work at fair pay, before that I just wanted to spend some time maybe working in a bar / greeting newcomers in reception. The reason for just wanting food and accommodation is reflective of the level of work I would be doing.

That's exactly what I was hoping to hear, advice on where to apply in advance is ideal, but if you think travelling around and enquiring in person would be fruitful, then there's hope yet!

You make it all seem so easy., arrive, take a week off and start work.
Hope you have a reserve of a few grand and be aware.... teaching is not for everyone.

There could be jobs on the islands over high season. Check Koh Rong Expats and Locals page on FB.

More ideas for you on this Koh Rong staff thread. The job offers will be mostly old, but should give you some ideas and some contacts. Staff rotation is high because most people are just passing through. help-wanted/staff-wanted-koh-rong-t14705.html

You could also try directly contacting hostels in Kampot and Siem Reap that look like a good fit .Definitely check out people's comments on Trip Advisor and social media to see what the vibe is before you contact them. From experience, some places do not look anything like they do on the internet, and things get old and decay fast in Cambodia.

Lastly, my opinion only, working in a PP hostel would not be much fun, and the one's I have visited were crappy. And, you do know that it's not worth looking at places in Sihanoukville ? Best of luck.

It's not low stress work, it's illegal for starters. And it's likely to be for long periods extremely boring with dull tourists and the odd transient or idiot backpacker on drugs turning up and telling you about their life transforming experiences. You'll end up fucked up on booze and drugs yourself in weeks and you'll be unemployable once you get to the relative civilization of the capital.

Teaching isn't for everyone but if you are a native speaker with an IQ above 100 and you aren't a drunk, drug addict or sexual deviant you should be able to get and subsequently hold down a TEFL job quite easily.
