Yea, I only wish I could follow my own advice.
Spoiler:
Cambodia,,,, Don't fall in love with her.
Like the spoilt child she is, she will not be happy till she destroys herself from within and breaks your heart.

Why Cambodia? You can get more bang for your buck in other countries. Wages are relatively low here and prices keep rising.
And about the teaching- if you’re good at it it can be really rewarding job, but having been a teacher for ages I can tell you must teachers aren’t that good, and then it can be struggle.
Make sure you have a plan b besides your teaching plans, and make sure you have a an idea about your live when you turn 60. As said before you will not build up any social security here and a medical issue will take a cut from your savings.

Wow awesome man I didn't know I could even get a job or work permit doing that in Cambodia i definitely want to stay in touch with you i have been in every big time data center and server in the bay area. Samsung, Tesla, Zynga, Huawei, netgear, damn you name it I have done everything from ground up data center builds 250+ cabinet builds all the way to basic service calls like data drops, AP installs, rack and stack ect... I absolutely love that type of work and am very experienced and have a great reference with my PM.Mishmash wrote: ↑Wed Oct 23, 2019 8:47 am @JamesAlexander89
Welcome to Cambodia.
It's a fantastic country at least to me.
Your skill set is fantastic and just what this country needs.
My friends build data-centers, as do I.
Banks, Embassies, Offices, Condos.
By all means get yourself a TEFL and start out teaching, but please don't limit yourself.
I can help you for sure - got all the contacts you need in this particular sub-set of the Construction Industry.
I'm not rich but then again I am not poor and I became here far more than I ever was due to the loyalty, commitment and respect shown by the Khmer people.
Come and bring your skills!!!
I'd love to take the opportunity but also I'd like to get my feet wet with this teaching gig first. I'd like to stick to the route I have laid for myself but by all means yes I do want to do data work. Let's stay in touch.
Re: Moving to Phnom Penh in January 2020
That sounds like a good start. One thing you should realize is that the TEFL industry is completely profit-driven and that language schools are almost universally poorly managed throughout the region. Even old what's-its-name (the top aussie place) has a less than stellar reputation.JamesAlexander89 wrote: ↑Wed Oct 23, 2019 2:22 am
I did some research and decided to earn my TEFL certification in my spare time while working my normal gig with the intent to teach English abroad.
I have already set up some interviews with schools and am quite confident in finding work but if anyone has some tips or pointers in terms of schools looking for teachers I would be more than happy to hear about it. Also if there are any opportunities to use my current tech and network infrastructure skills as a side occupation I would be very interested in knowing if that can be utilized in Cambodia.
So, you should also be contacting some of the better universities in town.

Of course, many of these are also poorly run as well,

I may be going to hell in a bucket,
but at least I'm enjoying the ride.

We have tons of contacts in Asia the owner of our company and a ton of employees are asian immigrants. A lot of our suppliers are in Asia we do business trips there twice a year..at least the higher ups. My travel for work has been strictly within the united states although I do travel from state to state and all over California for work. Anyway, I'll definitely take your advice and keep my feelers out. It's a no brainers I'd much rather be working in data and security than being a teacher but I feel teaching english will be very fulfilling in Cambodia to me personally. I think it will feel great and be a rewarding way of helping the community dispite how many people responding are warning me I will be miserableCowshed Cowboy wrote: ↑Wed Oct 23, 2019 9:07 am When I visited SE Asia on a year out and decided it was where I wanted to live I went back to my home country and looked for a job with a multinational with operations in the region, best move I ever did and once you get that first job it opens far more possibilities. A couple of points, not everyone on a professional career path wants to relocate abroad and if you've spent a bit of time already in the region and liked it, companies will look on you as less of a risk in what can be an expensive relocation exercise for themselves. I'd be looking and approaching US companies in your field with operations in the more advanced economies in the region as your route in, get yourself established and if they expand in future years to the developing economies like Vietnam, Myanmar and possibly Cambodia you have more chance of being in the right place at the right time.
Your current plan is a potential disaster and within 6 months going down that route you'll realise it.

I laughed super hard at this That is the stereotypical reason people move to the region and although I met a lot of great people and of course women on my travels I dont know anyone in Cambodia at all. I am coming solo and a but blind do that is why I am reaching out here. I really do want to teach English I think it will be very fulfilling.

Wow thanks for the information man I'll definitely look into different school options. Is there a page you know of that talks about school policy from school to school. Almost like a "glass door" type deal?sigmoid wrote: ↑Wed Oct 23, 2019 11:54 amThat sounds like a good start. Yeah sure - I'm on Whatsapp Wechat Line Viber Telegram and Signal +85577610022
Just to show you I'm no bullshitter - here is my project with my pals for the Prince Data Center, although will be using Legrand not Huawei
I have not detailed the full quote as the BOQ is too large to snapshot - still 3 mill is not bad for a 3rd world country.

It's a wise move - better learn the language and culture first... Chill out in your teaching gigs..
Construction is NOT like in the West and neither is business.
