School selection
Once again, we find ourselves in need of an alternative school for two kids.
4yrs old
6yrs old
Two schools this year have enrolled the kids in an English language based curriculum. Once enrolled, it has become apparent that the teachers involved are actually unable to speak, read or write English properly. I’d hardly call them teachers at all.
I’ve recently complained to the head teacher (Sovannaphumi) about the attitude of one teacher, and the teachers’ inability to speak English. The schools response is to cancel the kids enrolment at 7am this morning.
Now, I know that the school system here appears hopeless. It should be deemed negligence that the schools behave as they do. But Cambodia is not there currently.
So what I could use right now is schools suggestions within a reasonable range of The old market. Schools that you’ve had actual experience of. I’ve done plenty of scouting around previously, I’ve set my expectations bar much lower, and still discounted a fair few simply because they couldn’t provide any reason to have confidence in their ability to teach.

Wow. The school had a perfect opportunity to address some deficiencies with their curriculum/staff and this is the response? Classic face-saving tactic.Freightdog wrote: ↑Tue Oct 08, 2019 8:08 am The schools response is to cancel the kids enrolment at 7am this morning.
I believe on the corner of 51st and 154 street there is a Westline branch.
No personal experience with this school but they have branches everywhere and usually staff a healthy amount of native English speakers.
Hell, there are a few prominent CEO teflers who taught at that location when it was an earlier incarnation, many years back.
Good luck FD.
Re: School selection
Good luck @Freightdog in your search. I am sorry to hear of your bad experience.
May I suggest that you find a school with at least a fair proportion of filipinas? They are usually genuine dedicated educators. I have met some really superb ones, seen their classrooms and watched them in action. Despite being handicapped by 'the schools' and 'bosses' they work hard for the kids.
Hope you find a local school with some there

I’m interested too! How much are the school fees in the BKK area? My Cambodian son is 6 years old now, looking for Khmer cursus with English as second language.

Re: School selection
No easy task. I’m supposed to head back to Europe for work in two days. Interviewing schools is no easy or quick task. They’ll happily introduce you to the teachers that could do the job, but in fact are not the teachers who will be doing the teaching. We’ve learned this from bitter experience.
At sovannaphumi, the two teachers that I spoke to had perfect English. They were reassigned to other classes at the start of term. I never saw them again.
Just choosing any school is fraught with risk, as there is a real chance of reinforcing negative learning.
Talk about screwed up!

Sorry for your kids. Home schooling is the best solution for a native English parent. As for schools, it's more a matter of not the best one, but the least worst.

As my old Cajun bait seller used to say, "I opes you luck.

Re: School selection
Those kind of schools are okay for young kids but they don't usually have a very broad curriculum. I think most are just set up as English language learning centers for local kids who do a half day at the public schools.
Unfortunately anything better costs a whole lot more.
