Once again, we find ourselves in need of an alternative school for two kids.

Two schools this year have enrolled the kids in an English language based curriculum. Once enrolled, it has become apparent that the teachers involved are actually unable to speak, read or write English properly. I’d hardly call them teachers at all.
I’ve recently complained to the head teacher (Sovannaphumi) about the attitude of one teacher, and the teachers’ inability to speak English. The schools response is to cancel the kids enrolment at 7am this morning.

Now, I know that the school system here appears hopeless. It should be deemed negligence that the schools behave as they do. But Cambodia is not there currently.

So what I could use right now is schools suggestions within a reasonable range of The old market. Schools that you’ve had actual experience of. I’ve done plenty of scouting around previously, I’ve set my expectations bar much lower, and still discounted a fair few simply because they couldn’t provide any reason to have confidence in their ability to teach.

No easy task. I’m supposed to head back to Europe for work in two days. Interviewing schools is no easy or quick task. They’ll happily introduce you to the teachers that could do the job, but in fact are not the teachers who will be doing the teaching. We’ve learned this from bitter experience.

At sovannaphumi, the two teachers that I spoke to had perfect English. They were reassigned to other classes at the start of term. I never saw them again.
Just choosing any school is fraught with risk, as there is a real chance of reinforcing negative learning.

Talk about screwed up!
