There are very few mosquitoes in Phnom Penh compared to some rural areas.

Me and others have noticed an increase recently in the amount of mosquitoes around. I've definitely noticed a lot more in my house compared to the odd one i used to see buzzing around.
If you enjoy noise pollution and obnoxious driving practices, Phnom Penh is the place for you!

This year is a bad year post365382.html#p365382

I dunno what the rate/risk of infection is in PP but Mrs Cargo got it about 6 weeks ago and it really knocked her around..

Anecdotally, she said she heard a number of her friends had got and the doctor at the clinic where we got her saline/sugar drips plus meds to treat the symptoms said they had a big increase this year.

Whatever the risk, prevention is the best course ie avoid getting bitten using mozzie spray, covering up etc.

It's not the number of mosquitoes that matters. It's the number of infected mosquitoes. Dengue will spread more quickly in highly populated areas even if there are less mosquitoes.
Take extra precautions to spray and protect yourself when you are living with an infected person or if there is a dengue outbreak in the neighbourhood.
Mosquitoes become infected when they bite a person infected with the virus. Infected mosquitoes can then spread the virus to other people through bites.

In the city, avoid outdoor areas with no air circulation, close to stagnant water or plants, and always spray your feet before you go out in the evening.
This is not scientific at all, but mosquitoes always go for my feet. :dm: Bastards.

I live in what could be described as a "suburb" of Phnom Penh. It doesn't flood much but even though there are empty swampy lots nearby full of croaking frogs that pop up anytime it rains, I don't get mosquitoes. I lived in places before that had plenty. Malaria is very rare in this part of the country but Dengue is endemic and there have been a huge number of cases recently. I lived in places that had rats, that I could never get used to, but they are almost impossible to keep out of the average wooden house here. Fucking things gave the creeps whether it was in Finchley Road or Kampong Phluik. 8-)

Keep off the ground floor. the higher upo you are the less mossies you tend to get.
I have found that the electric mossies killers which use liquid are pretty effective. the best one is from Thai and has blue writing on it, the next best is also from thai with red writin on. available from Areon and sometimes Thai hout, about $6, refills last 30 or 60 days and about $3. The tanlet ones are uselss. Have not yey tried the orange one whcih has english writing on , i think Jumbo or Dumbo

The Dengue is pretty bad this year.

People bring their kids from the provinces to hospital here and the whole thing then kicks off in PP

Here in Kakap there were a few cases at my son's school two months ago. Also one neighbor plus the lady at one of the mom and pop shops on the corner.

I spray the house every week with RAID - everywhere the fuckers like to hide during the day - it leaves a film on everything so when they land they die.

Added advantage is the roaches die - just by walking across the floor - I see one or two in the mornings for around a week after the spray.

At dusk I light the mosquito coil and place in front of the fan to catch any newcomers.
