Charles Schwab charges 0 for atm withdrawals.
Notify them you will be traveling before you leave so you don't get locked out.
Best have a credit card as backup in case you lose your card.
I plan to bring about $45,000 in cash. I heard this is OK as long as a I declare it when i leave the USA and when I arrive in Cambodia. My state pension will go into a joint account with my daughter and she can wire me the money when I need more.
I would NOT bring that cash to cambodia , if you die , it’s gone ... get a bank in the USA and leave it there , better if your daughter has access — get a debit card for when you need it . I take a thousand out at a time to lesson the costs of ATM fees and put it in my local account for easy free ATM access after that
Credit cards are very handy if you need it for any emergency . Think about getting one ..
apply for a no fee credit card , it’s easy ...
.. i use my credit card to pay for things that my son sends to me ... no they don’t send the bills thru the mail .. it’s thru the banking / credit card apps and email . You’ll find out how to get things sent later ...
You have to look into that and thank _ s __ that you have a daughter to help you .
You’re smart to learn all this before you come ...
if you die here , your money here is gone ...

Re: Introduce Yourself
Visit Cambodia first and decide if living here is right for you. Get a ordinary visa then go to an agent and have it extended. You can bring up to $10,000 in cash without declaring anything. Bring the ATM card as a backup. Rent an apartment for a few weeks or a month or two. Live in different places - try Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, and Kampot for starters. Very few places take credit cards. Bills are paid in cash and in person.GreatGrizzlyTed wrote:I don't use credit cards and how would I even get the monthly bills or pay them from Cambodia?? Is the mail reliable there?

Don’t bring $45,000 in cash. That just makes you a target for thieves. Armed robbery is rare, but bag snatching is common. Thankfully, the robbers here don’t shoot a victim dead first, then rob afterwards.
There are no mailboxes at every house or apartment. If the post office gets something, they will contact and the person picks goes to pick it up. Valuable items shipped through the post office will reliably go missing.
If you decide to live in Cambodia, you can open a bank account and have the money wired in.
Good luck.

I'm not planning on dying soon and don't care what happens to the cash if I die. I just need to bring enough to cover me for a year or so. How much does a good used car cost there? Do they have American cars or only Asian cars?pissontheroof wrote: ↑Thu Sep 26, 2019 10:26 amGreatGrizzlyTed wrote: ↑Thu Sep 26, 2019 9:15 amI don't use credit cards and how would I even get the monthly bills or pay them from Cambodia?? I drive a Chevy pickup. I've had it 18 years. Before that I drove a Dodge. Any American truck will do.Nicolas wrote: ↑Thu Sep 26, 2019 4:58 pm American cars? What do you mean? In the top 10 best car sales in the USA you have Honda, Toyota and Nissan models. You will be fine

Wire transfers are expensive per use - $20-30. Get a debit card on the account and draw cash at an ATM or in bank branch. You can use a service like Transferwise to shuttle larger sums of money.GreatGrizzlyTed wrote:I don't use credit cards and how would I even get the monthly bills or pay them from Cambodia?? What makes you think an American car would be your best choice in Cambodia?
I never drove a Dodge or Chevrolet so maybe I’m missing something...
