The Cambodian Davis Cup squad departed Phnom Penh for Vietnam yesterday evening for their April 2nd Asia/ Oceania group III Davis Cup campaign opener in Hanoi’s My Dinh Sports complex.

At a joint news conference at the Cambodian Country Club on Tuesday, Tennis Cambodia secretary-general Tep Rithivit was optimistic of Cambodia’s chances.

“Our tennis players are confident of reaching the next group stage, said Rithivit. “And it would be a great result if we can achieve it – so soon after our 2017 promotion.”

The eight other nations vying for just two slots in Group II are Jordan, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Pacific Oceania, Syria, Malaysia, Qatar and hosts Vietnam. Sunday’s official draw will divide the nine into two groups.

Cambodia regained a coveted group III spot in 2017 and earned the distinction of finishing their campaign undefeated after seeing off Oman in their promotion playoff in the Davis Cup Group IV Asia/Oceania round in Isa Town, Bahrain.

The Cambodian team were struggling to keep up, despite the decision to call on the younger generation. It may take them a few years to develop players who will take them to a higher level of play.

Cambodia’s Davis Cup team serves up changes after bust-up
5 April 2018
Cambodia’s tennis dynamic is set for a shift towards building a strong second line following a decision by non-playing captain Tep Rithivit and national head coach Braen Aneiros that it was time for the younger generation to take over the torch from seasoned campaigners like Bun Kenny, who has pivoted the Kingdom’s Davis Cup efforts over the past six years.

Cambodia suffered their second rubberless defeat in the ongoing Asia/ Oceania Group III series against a strong Vietnam line-up at the My Dinh Sports Complex Indoor Arena on Wednesday night.

Saudis relegate Cambodia to Davis Cup Group IV
8 April 2018
Cambodia’s hard earned promotion to Group III last year in Bahrain was lost at the My Dinh Sports Complex indoor arena in Hanoi on Saturday night after the Kingdom went down 0-3 to Saudi Arabia in the relegation playoff to drop down to the lowest tier of competition in the next Davis Cup Asia/Oceania zone cycle.

At the start, Cambodia’s survival instincts kicked in and 19-year-old Delton Sophana Kim, who returned to the squad after a gap of three years, squeezed out the first set on the one break point out of the five he got against Saud Alhaqbani in the opening rubber.

But that was as far as Sophana Kim was allowed to go as his rival took control of the court at the start of the second set and never slackened his grip to give Saudi Arabia a 1-0 advantage after completing a 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 win stretching out to little more than two hours;

With pressure mounting on Long Samneang to keep the hope of a comeback alive in the second singles match, the Cambodian right-hander, who has been part of Davis Cup stints since 2012, could hardly contain a rampaging Ammar Alhaqbani, who raced to a 6-1, 6-2 win to put the tie beyond Cambodia’s reach.

“To be honest I have mixed feelings right now. Obviously I am terribly disappointed going down to Group IV. But at the same time, I feel it is a good time for Tennis Cambodia to give an opportunity for young and inexperienced players to be the leaders of the national team,’’ head coach Braen Aneiros told The Post.

The Kingdom’s 16-years-and-under tennis team came away from a memorable 2019 Junior Davis Cup by BNP Paribas pre-qualifying tournament in Colombo, Sri Lanka with pride very much intact and high hopes for the future, after improving on their 2016 showing.

Following losses to Pacific Oceania and Turkmenistan in the round-robin pool, Cambodia were placed in a back-draw with the other teams that had placed third or fourth in their respective pools.

Cambodian players are getting ready for the Davis Cup in September.

Kenny reaches semis at National Circuit in KL
26 July 2019 | 14:55 ICT
Last weekend, Cambodia’s No1 ranked player Bun Kenny entered the third leg of Tennis Malaysia’s National Circuit as No2 seed. Kenny debuted the tournament in great form, disposing of his opponents in straight sets. In the third round, he faced 26-year-old Syed Ariffin Syed Naguib of Malaysia, seeded 13th, and easily won 6-1, 6-0.

The fourth round saw him face his strongest opponent yet, sixth seeded Liu Hui Retallick from the UK. This was no problem for Bun – the Cambodian national was up to the task and defeated the Brit 6-1, 7-6(6). Bun went on to play the younger Eric Olivarez Jr in the semi-final. Starting off hot, Bun won the first set 6-3. But in the end he eventually fell to the right handed Filipino 3-6, 3-6.

“Overall, I feel like I played a good tournament. The fourth round and semi-final matches were trickier for me as my opponents mixed up their game a bit more and I had to adapt”, said Bun Kenny following his return to Phnom Penh.

There are many more tournaments coming up in August as Cambodia prepares for the Davis Cup which will be held in Amman, Jordan, in September. The Davis Cup is an excellent opportunity for the National squad to show their growth. Notably, Kenny and Long Samneang will be participating in three ITF Futures events, whereas the rest of the national team will take part in the Thailand Open on August 10.

“Competition is important at this stage. Our players need to compete in the last few weeks before the Davis Cup in Jordan. They’ve had a gruelling training the past two months.

“Now it’s time to get matches and compete before our Davis Cup campaign in September,” said Tennis Cambodia secretary-general Tep Rithivit.

Good luck to the players of Team Cambodia.

Tennis Cambodia heads to Jordan for Davis Cup
09 September 2019 | 18:35 ICT
On Wednesday, Tennis Cambodia’s men’s national team will enter the courts once more in the longest-running international team event in the world, the Davis Cup.

This year’s campaign is being held in Amman, Jordan, from September 11 -14 at the Jordan Tennis Association’s home courts in downtown Amman.

Seven years ago, Tennis Cambodia shocked the region in their Asia/Oceania Zone Group IV Davis Cup debut in Doha, Qatar by sweeping all five nations they faced in 2012.

After earning promotion in 2012, Cambodia competed in Group III for the next four years until being relegated for the first time.

Currently the national team is ranked 106th in the world, sitting between Mongolia and Mozambique.
