Dual-pricing for foreigners now legal at Thai public hospitals

Thailand is Cambodia's neighbor to the West, and this forum is dedicated to Thai news, stories, reviews, blogs, videos, Thai people and anything else related to the country. A lot of expats have both lived and worked in Cambodia and Thailand, and this area is a place to discuss all aspects of life in Thailand and what's going on there. Most topics are about Bangkok and Pattaya because of their larger populations of expatriates and tourists in those cities, but this is for all things Thai.

Insurance distorts the relationship between the payer of health care and the consumer of health care.

In the past, insurance was only catastrophic. Something bad happened, that was beyond the ability of one to predict and pay for, insurance stepped in.

People used to make choices about what they wanted and didn’t want and paid appropriately for it.

Now insurance pays for all. And not surprisingly they dictate what care a patient gets. They also dictate what they will pay out as well.

So now patients want it all, since they don’t pay for it. And insurance companies want to keep it all, since they pay for it (and aren’t the beneficiaries of that care).

And yeah, citizens in a national insurance plan already pay into it, so should deservedly pay less.

The tricky part is mandated care, regardless of payment. Thus people with no money get expensive care too. Unless the hospital or clinic can force people who pay to pay higher charges to offset the free care, it goes out of business.

And everyone loses.
