Supreme court releases former prisoner Ho Chamroeun

A Supreme Court judge has ordered the release of Ho Chamroeun who was convicted of attempted murder and has been embroiled in several scandals involving the fraud of a Chinese company, according to a Supreme Court official who told a local news agency this afternoon.

A Supreme Court official has confirmed that Chamroeun has already served 18 months in connection with a shooting incident at his home in Prey Sor commune. However, in the case of a scam involving millions of dollars from foreign companies, the court is continuing the proceedings.

The defendant asked for bail, but the municipal court and the appellate court rejected the request. On Wednesday the Supreme Court decided to release Chamroeun.

The former tycoon was sentenced to 18 months in prison for threatening to shoot his wife at his mansion in Dangkor district in April 2018.

Two Chinese investors and a Korean have filed separate lawsuits against Chamroeun for embezzling more than $200 million in development funds for projects such as a modern hospital in Takhmao city of Kandal province.
