If he wanted help from his family and embassy he should have contacted his family and embassy, not gone to Cambodian officials and said "I want food and a place to sleep and a plane ticket home."

The slide into this situation is usually a symptom of deteriorating psychological disfunctions.
For most it is not a choice - and hopefully to most, it is not shameful.
It is a medical condition rather than a moral one, both doctors and priests agree on that.
And i doubt if there are many votes amongst the expat community for tightening up the personal finance checking.
PS, Cambodia does not pay.
...just my view
It's an insult and disservice to people who are truly mentally ill to say that most of these Western guys who travel to party towns like Phnom
Penh, Pattaya, or Tijiuana and run out of money are "mentally ill" and that their situation is not the result of choice.
Cambodia pays the salaries of the immigration officials who have to deal with these guys. Cambodia pays to build and staff and operate detention centers to hold them. Cambodia pays to feed them while they are detained. Cambodia pays to transport them to the Thai border. I don't know who pays for their flights if they are deported by air.

I believe the detainee does. If he/she can't, they remain a guest of the Cambodian government (and a drain on the taxpayers) until they can start a 'Go Fund Me' campaign.

You make it sound like you'd prefer it if he, and others like him, were left to die on the street! Sure, he has probably made some bad lifestyle choices, and contributed to his poorly state, like many others before him. Let him that is without error cast the first stone at him - that sure as heck won't be me. I've made some pretty dumb decisions in my time and have needed another chance, I hope this guy gets a chance to redeem himself.pobrecito wrote: ↑Fri Aug 23, 2019 8:21 amIf he wanted help from his family and embassy he should have contacted his family and embassy, not gone to Cambodian officials and said "I want food and a place to sleep and a plane ticket home."

Pieman, you've gone up in my estimation, though I don't believe we've met.

Talking about 136st. Immigration police could full a bus with the number of homeless Barang annoying paying customers for a free beer. Many also aggressive if you tell them to bugger off.
Time they swept these bastards up also.

i would say most guys who live in pp have mental issues. The police once sectioned me because they could not defeat me.I was there 18days.the worst off my life until i managed to get my solicter to hold a appeal with a high court judge who tore into the police whose defence was he is the biggest Cocaine dealer in Nw Lancashire.Fuck me there is no one more anti drug than me.When i was released the police asked the judge for a bail address he turned to me,asked were i was going to stay i said The Hilton Blackpool. He gave me the thumbs up and said he would drop me off as thats were he was staying.
