Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. Cambodian Rice Federation Appeals to EU to Save Livelihoods of 500,000 families

Post by Adam Xie »

Fresh news

Phnom Penh (FN), Aug. 22 - In the first six months of 2019, Cambodia exported more than 137,000

tons of rice to the European Union (EU). That is a lot of rice, but it is half the amount that was exported
during the same period in 2018, according to Cambodian Rice Federation (CRF).

“As of the first of this year, the EU imposed duties on Cambodian rice in order to protect domestic producers. This has been acutely felt by most of the 500,000 families who eke out a living farming jasmine and fragrant long grain rice, in spite of the fact that these varieties are geographically specific and do not compete directly with products grown in the EU, CRF wrote in its press release dated Thursday.

Could it be Government is playing the tough guy role meanwhile business association playing the begging role, (as response to EU's decision to withdraw EBA)

Presumably the shortfall was sold, but at a lower price.
If they only lost 50% of their sales to the EU, I would say they did a good marketing job.
Looking at the data, the price of Jasmine rice is currently $416 per ton and the tax imposed by the EU from 18 January 2019 is 175 euros (currently $193) per ton. In which case the price to the EU buyer increased by 46%.
