Hundreds held over Sihanoukville VoIP scams

Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

Police detain one of the 127 Chinese nationals arrested over VoIP scams. Fresh News

August 16, 2019

Police in Preah Sihanouk province, in cooperation with Chinese police, on Wednesday raided two rental houses in Sihanoukville and arrested hundreds of Chinese nationals suspected of operating Voice over Internet Protocol scams.

Major General Chuon Narin, provincial police chief, said police arrested 127 nationals, including 11 women, in two separate locations in Sihanoukville

He said authorities nabbed 112 suspects hiding in a five-storey building in Buon commune and caught 15 others in a hotel in Pi commune.

“We also cooperated with Chinese police,” he said. “We have their criminal records and arrest warrants. Chinese authority was cooperating with us so well.

“They were involved in VoIP scams and extorting money from people in their country,” Lt Gen Sok Khy said, adding that the suspects are being questioned at the National Police headquarters in Phnom Penh and will be deported to China.

“We will deport them to China as soon as possible,” Lt Gen Sok Khy said.
