Rare Native Banteng Found Dead
August 12, 2019
Oddar Meanchey, Cambodia News: On 10 August 2019, forest rangers came across the carcass of a male adult banteng weighing about 500kgs in the Sdao Wildlife Sanctuary, near Chhouk Meas Village,Oddar Meanchey.
The banteng is an endangered species and the beast was wounded on its back as well as on the left hind leg. Rangers say that snares and an electric device were found nearby, so they believe that this might be the work of wildlife poachers.
Monks from the community forest have said they will perform a ceremony to celebrate the life of the banteng, as they mourn the loss of another rare animal.
2,000 to 4,000 wild banteng are estimated to be living in Cambodia’s eastern plains, and environmental officials have collected three banteng carcasses and one gaur carcass from conservation areas over the past two years.

Re: Rare Native Banteng Found Dead
Cambodia News, Oddar Meanchey: According to the Ministry of Environment, another rare banteng has been found shot dead on June 20, 2020, in a forest in Oddar Meanchey province.
According to Neth Pheaktra, Secretary of State and Environment Ministry Spokeswoman, on the evening of June 20, 2020, a joint working group, led by Monk Bun Saluth, and Chief of Oddar Meanchey Province, examined the body and concluded that the banteng, who died several days ago, was killed by gunshot wounds.
The body of the animal was brought to Prey Veng community's headquarters, where, according to Buddhist monk Bun Saluth, there will be a Buddhist festival dedicated to the dead who will be buried alongside the corpse of another banteng that died on May 24.
The Ministry of Environment says that this is the sixth dead banteng who has died from poaching over the past six months. They call on all Cambodians to stop shooting this rare and protected species.
