On returning to the Kingdom, I went to the bars on 136 to get the most up to date health and nutrition advice. I was told by a number of girls that "pork no good". When I enquired as to why I was told "something about bacteria from pork from Vietnam". Is this some kind of conflation of the African swine flu and the old "don't trust the yuon" thing? If this belief is widespread it must be having an impact on the local pork industry. I was also told I not to eat chicken because of the large road graze on my leg. When I asked if it was ok to eat beef they weren't to sure. So my dietary options are a bit limited. Was also told that I am a very lucky man "maybe one in a hundred" because I have "flowers" in my fingernails.

It is true that overly industrial pig farms worldwide are being hit very hard. Some estimates claim 1 in 4 pigs are dying before making it to the butchers due to a viral diarrhoea (even the wall street journal made mention of this). Relatively "organic" farms (free range pigs, for lack of better wording) are relatively unaffected however.

So conflate this to the average Cambodian bargirl intellect and reasoning and you end up with a statement like what you heard.

Quite some people on str 136 are scared sick animals are still sold in the market and they don't believe it's non infectious for humans.

Seems that people are eating less pork, particularly those who live close to the Vietnamese border. As usual, there are a lot of rumors and limited information.
