Post by Soi Dog »

So many major infrastructure proposals lately. How many will ever get the green light?

A Chinese company has presented an ambitious plan to build an expressway over Phnom Penh in an effort to relieve traffic congestion.

Representatives from Henan Provincial Communications Planning Survey and Design Institute (HPC) revealed plans for the expressway to Deputy Prime Minister Keat Chhon in Phnom Penh on Monday. If built, the expressway would run from the Camko Satellite City roundabout to the airport, according to a statement from Chhon’s office.

“The [expressway] will enhance the development of the country and especially boost its sustainable economic growth and lift the standard of people’s lives,” HPC chairman Chang Xingwen is quoted as saying in the statement.

Chhon agreed in principle to a build-operate-transfer arrangement with HPC but stressed that the road should run over the city rather than through it.

“The company has to think and definitely conduct feasibility studies about the project’s economic efficiency and the internal rate of return,” he said.

HPC agreed to Chhon’s call for a feasibility study but did not say when one would be done.

I spotted a spelling mistake there. Should that not read '''IF ONE WOULD BE DONE ''
Cambodia,,,, Don't fall in love with her.
Like the spoilt child she is, she will not be happy till she destroys herself from within and breaks your heart.

Yes, built like the freeway PP to Siem Reap. Lets build a freeway, but first lets take out the road, but oops all the money for the freeway went in someone's pocket so its a wide, dusty, mud filled expanse of endless dirt.

There already is a ring road that pretty much does just that. Coming form Odong it is just past the first market by the overpass. It originally was a great dirt and tarmac road. Now it is worse than a 4 wheel drive jeep trail. The big dump trucks have destroyed the road and now it is full of craters that would swallow up a Camray. I had to use this road about a month go and it took 2 hours to go 35 km. They really need to regulate the weights of the trucks allowed on the roads. Overweight trucks will destroy a road faster than anything.

I may not like the French, but every city they built (and the Brits) in Southeast Asia is well laid out in nice grids. Everything that is done by locals is, well look at Bangkok for example. PP, wide streets laid out by the French surrounded by a rabbits-wren of hodge-podge streets built after they left. Hundreds of years ago the French learned their lesson on disease in sewage and building choked Paris. They tore down buildings and made wide boulevards and a major sewer system. How long before PP sinks into its own crap, but they do have three rivers they can dump it into.

the French know about architecture and urban design.
you want a nice city, hire a french design firm, simple as that.

Phnom Penh is a lost cause, at this point the city is such a mess that they'd better build a new city from scratch.
