Stay away from Khao San Road from October for a few months.

Thailand is Cambodia's neighbor to the West, and this forum is dedicated to Thai news, stories, reviews, blogs, videos, Thai people and anything else related to the country. A lot of expats have both lived and worked in Cambodia and Thailand, and this area is a place to discuss all aspects of life in Thailand and what's going on there. Most topics are about Bangkok and Pattaya because of their larger populations of expatriates and tourists in those cities, but this is for all things Thai.

Bangkok’s Khao San Road is getting a US$1.6 million makeover to clean up backpacker ghetto

" According to a July 22 article in the Bangkok Post, city officials have allocated 48 million baht (US$1.6 million) for a five-month revamp of the rough-around-the-edges destination."

"Static vendors will be permitted to trade from 9am to 9pm while pushcarts selling drinks, fruit and food, a roadside staple in the city, will no longer be allowed to trundle down Khao San."

"They say you can’t polish a turd, and nor should you want to. Leave Khao San Road for those who want it as it is, there’s plenty of Bangkok to go around."

“All languages are welcome on Bangkok’s Khao San Road, including Drunkard.”

Image A boondoggle is a project that is considered a waste of both time and money, yet is often continued due to extraneous policy or political motivations.

I may be going to hell in a bucket,
but at least I'm enjoying the ride.

I'm glad you explained what Boondoggle is, I was just about to start searching on some porn sites to look for it .
Cambodia,,,, Don't fall in love with her.
Like the spoilt child she is, she will not be happy till she destroys herself from within and breaks your heart.

Based on me and my mate’s 2 night stay there last year I’d recommend permanently avoiding it. Overpriced and underwhelming would be my summary. An afternoon sitting watching the passing stereotypical freak show over a few beers Is as good as it’s gets. The white dreadlocked crowd in the Jamaican coloured elephant pants crack me up.
Yes sir, I can boogie, I can boogie, boogie, boogie all night long.

haven't been there in over 20 years, cant ever see going again
The days of Khao San road being a haven for Western backpackers seem to be well and truly over.
Gone are the days of banana pancakes and fake student cards - here are the days of vendors greeting tourists with a hearty "Ni Hao Ma".

The Chinese are there in droves and the government has started to teach traders to speak Chinese instead of concentrating on English.
The Thais are doing all they can to promote the area as a "must do" for every Chinese visitor.
