Cockfighting

Have questions or resources regarding Khmer Culture? This forum is all about the Kingdom of Cambodia's culture. Khmer language, Cambodian weddings, French influence, Cambodian architecture, Cambodian politics, Khmer customs, etc? This is the place. Living in Cambodia can cause you to experience a whole new level of culture shock, so feel free to talk about all things related to the Khmer people, and their traditions. And if you want something in Khmer script translated into English, you will probably find what you need.

Everybody together with a sort of fevered good natured intensity, seducing you to enjoin - but which I realised later was the first stage of bloodlust.

I thought it was OK for a minute or so - everybody likes a bit of biffo.
But when the first fountain of blood from a cut artery spurted ten feet in the air I left. Never been back.
But the cocks are beautiful, as is the whole scene of raising, honouring, grooming, whispering to them so gently.
I'd never seen any animal fighting until I once went to Takeo Province for a few days. Sitting minding my own business playing Tien Lien (not for money) with the family then the next thing I know, 2 cocks going at it in the yard. Never seen money fly about so quickly amongst the locals.

After the smaller rooster had dug out the eye of the neighbor's bigger rooster, they called it to a halt. I'm still unsure whether this was a planned fight or it was just a territory thing between the birds. Two things; 1) the locals couldn't throw down their bets quick enough. 2) I don't want to see it again.

You are asking people to show you where to find something illegal. I wouldnt want a situation where the police turned up, and the locals thought you had informed them.

Option 1. Travel to out-of-the-way places in Cambodia, until you come across a place with a lot of roosters. Then ask them if they will let you see the cockfights.

Option 2. There is a town in Cambodia near the Thailand border, with a lot of casinos. I have been told they run cockfights there openly. I have not seen them myself.

That's all chickens do anyway, just moan and peck at things and try to kill any animal that's sick and eat them etc. Disgusting creatures.
The cock-keeping culture is a bit different.
But yeah, i know what you mean.

My No 1 reason for glaring at them maliciously, is the damage they do to any decorative garden you establish here. You can fence off your veggie patch, but fences pretty much trashes any natural looking garden effect you might want.
Any suggestions? (apart from more pots)

I've seen a bit of "chicken boxing" out in the sticks (Cambodia and Thailand), high days and holidays are when they usually happen (they watch televised fights from Indonesia? in the afternoons when there is no live action), they're very popular with the menfolk and the kids. When the birds are fitted with spurs the fights are usually over very quickly, when spurs are not used the fights seem to go on for ever (more like a test of endurance) The main appeal for the natives seems to be the gambling aspect and large sums are wagered (often by folk who look like they cannot afford to lose), personally speaking, if you're not a gambler (I'm not) see one cockfight and you've seen them all. What is more interesting, in my opinion, is the handling of the birds in the run up to, and during the fight. It's like regular boxing, with corner men (not always the owners)psyching their fighters up, massaging tired muscles, fanning the birds and spraying water from their mouths onto the birds to cool them between rounds.
