Bumping up this thread with some good news. There are so many drowning accidents that involve Cambodian kids because they can't swim. In Svay Rieng, some people are taking on the responsibility to teach children to swim and be safe in water.

Svay Rieng: Dyvy, president of the Cambodian Confederation of Youth Federation in the morning of July 27, 2019, has organized sessions to teach children to save themselves from drowning under the theme of "Reducing Dangers of Drowning in Children", called "NO KIDS DROWN", in Svay Rieng Province.

Please note that the establishment of a self-help program to teach children to swim in a pool set up at a local school is an initiative sponsored by the Federal Union Youth of Svay Rieng province

Never too late- I learned to swim in Cambodia aged 30+

We had lessons at primary school, but I was always terrible at it. Mixture of sister trying to drown me in a pool, plus Jaws putting me off the sea for years, never got around to it.
Meum est propositum in taberna mori,
ut sint Guinness proxima morientis ori.
tunc cantabunt letius angelorum chori:
"Sit Deus propitius huic potatori."

I learned at 4, Taught my daughter to swim when she was 2
living on an island thought that was a good idea
In a nation run by swine, all pigs are upward-mobile and the rest of us are fucked until we can put our acts together: not necessarily to win, but mainly to keep from losing completely. HST

I learned when I was around 7, my primary school would take us to a heated pool once a week. I got pretty good at it in my early teens swimming in the rough but warm waters in the Bay of Biscay. I made sure my kid learned early, especially because we are surrounded by lakes and swamps. There should be more organisations dealing with this, a huge number of kids and adults drown here every year.
Silence, exile, and cunning.
