Cambodians asking personal questions

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

Cambodians asking personal questions

Post by Cam Nivag »

Cambodians seem to ask a lot of personal questions that we in the Western world would find “impolite.” A Cambodian you've just met may ask you "How much does your hotel room cost per night?" "What did you pay for your plane ticket?" "Are you having sex with that woman you’re with?” etc.

A Cambodian you've known a while may say "Nice to see you again. Why are you so fat now?"

They do this to each other too. If a Cambodian woman checks into a hotel with a Western husband or boyfriend, the staff may ask her "Are you a hooker?" or “Do you have sex with that guy on your period?” (OK, I made that last one up).

Have you ever been asked a humorous or surprising personal question by a Cambodian? Are Cambodians “just curious” or are they rude?

Are personal questions exclusively asked by low class Khmers like tuk tuk drivers, with high class Cambodians acting with such discretion and decorum that they don't ask questions like this?

The norm all over SE Asia. The very first questions I was asked when I came to Vietnam were "how old are you?", "are you married?", "how much do you weigh?". I must say it took me a while to get used to it.

What country are you from?
What job do you do and how much do you make
Do you like,( Cambodia, thailand, Laos)?
Are you married?
How long you stay?
In a nation run by swine, all pigs are upward-mobile and the rest of us are fucked until we can put our acts together: not necessarily to win, but mainly to keep from losing completely. HST

Had an immigration guy at the airport ask me: 'you like Cambodian girl?'

Was he just curious coz I have a lot of visa entries or does it say something about the stereotype khmers have about barangs?

Had other khmers ask: 'How about girls from your home country? Are they beautiful?'
