The glasses thing is very much anecdotal, and I believe it's told more as a simple way to explain what happened rather than having much truth.
It's certainly possible that some did, but their anti-materialistic philosophy would seem to be in conflict with that idea. There were as you know large amounts of trade in timber/ gems/ forest products at the time though and gold was a viable commodity. There were rumors around for a long time about a huge stash of tonnes of "Khmer Rouge gold" in the Malai/ Samlaut area but if it ever actually existed or was found nobody is saying.I wonder if the KR pulled gold teeth like the nazi's did?
