Samdech Kheng has ordered the Governor of Pursat to look at the case of illegal logging at Phnom Samkos
May 26, 2019, 11:22 AM
Image
The Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Interior, Samdech Krammeav Kheng, has ordered the Pursat governor to review the theft of timber in the Phnom Samkos Conservation Area near the Cardamons Mountain Range in Pursat, and has reported to Samdech HE to take action over this.
Image
Residents at the Phnom Samakos Protected Area say that Ratanak Sambath Company uses economic land concessions as an excuse, but is in fact logging forests in the mountains where the forest is supposed to be protected. They claim that the company has hired about 200 Vietnamese workers to log in the conservation area.
Sad to see those logs
Are they going to wait 100+ years to fell their replacements, if there even are any?

Forestry police vs. military troops from the local RCAF base? Pretty confident that armed troops will willingly lay down their arms and allow the forestry police to destroy their profits?

Nah. Probably more villagers will be arrested by the forestry police for chopping down firewood for their stoves.

Judging by the colour of that timber in first photo, it is not freshly cut. It makes me wonder why / how it has been hidden for so long .

Recent article from aljazeera on the work of activist Leng Ouch*, 2017 winner of the Goldman Environmental Prize. Article shows maps and video, the aljazeera program is beneath the article.

PLUNDERING CAMBODIA'S FORESTS
Meet the man on a mission to take down Cambodia's timber tycoons and expose a rampant illegal cross-border trade.
Under a rickety wooden stilt house near Cambodia's Phnom Prich Wildlife Sanctuary, one of the country's leading environmental campaigners is preparing dinner.

Ouch Leng stuffs raw meat into an empty beer can and throws it into the fire. It's a poor man's feast for his team of investigators to fuel them through a night's surveillance.

Chewing pork and buffalo, their infrared optics and cameras ready to record, they wait patiently for trucks to emerge from the darkness.

Their cargo? Timber logged illegally inside a wildlife sanctuary that is meant to be protected under Cambodian law.

"We went and saw eight trucks inside one sawmill and another timber truck was loaded with square logs," he says, as he chops vegetables for dinner.

"It's ready to export out tonight."

In order to have illegal logging, you need roads. There is a serious crackdown going on at the moment along the border regions with Vietnam. It may be too little too late, but at least some action is being taken to put a stop to the impunity of some of the most rich and powerful. The authorities may have finally figured out that at some stage there will be no more trees.

August 15, 2019
Road construction in protected area halted

A road construction project in Mondulkiri province has been suspended after authorities discovered the district governor who initated the project did not seek approval.

Sok Kheang, director of the provincial agriculture, forestry and fisheries department, yesterday said provincial Governor Svay Sam Eang on Tuesday ordered his subordinates to temporarily prevent heavy equipment from paving the road and clearing trees in Pou Raing village.

Mr Kheang noted that district Governor Siek Mony was summoned by Mr Sam Eang for allegedly clearing the land without permission from the Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Ministry and the Provincial Hall.

Mr Sam Eang could not be reached for comment yesterday. Deputy Governors Yim Lux and Peng Sambath said they were not aware of the case.

The road is located in the province’s Sen Monorom commune in O’Raing district. If completed, the road would penetrate the Keo Seima Wildlife Sanctuary, residents said.

Kroeung Tola, a representative of an indigenous Mondulkiri community, yesterday said residents in the area are concerned about road construction because it could lead to land encroachment at the Keo Seima Wildlife Sanctuary.
