Truckies To Learn Road Code and How to Drive Heavy Vehicles

Post by CEOCambodiaNews »

Good news. Some truck drivers are going to have lessons and learn the road code. A step in the right direction.

Ministry to provide training, licenses for heavy truck drivers
The Public Works and Transport Ministry yesterday announced it will provide training for all unlicensed truck drivers working at the Phnom Penh Autonomous Port starting today.

It said the training is to increase driving skills, introduce the Road Traffic Law, and reduce accidents involving heavy vehicles. Upon completion, truck drivers will have an opportunity to obtain a license.

Men Chansokol, director of the ministry’s land transport department, yesterday said the decision to provide training was made during a meeting between ministry officials and transportation company representatives on Friday.

Ms Chansokol said the training will be held from Monday to Friday, and that unlicensed truck drivers can take a test to be certified every week from Friday to Sunday.

“So far, about 100 people have applied for the ministry’s driving course,” she said. “The ministry will be offering the courses this week at Phnom Penh Autonamous Port and will subsequently offer the courses to those at the Sihanoukville Autonomous port.”

Ms Chansokol noted that the training was specially tailored for drivers of heavy vehicles.

“We know they can drive, but some of them learned from others, so they don’t know about traffic signs, inspections, or how to tow a container,” she said. “I think teaching these will help them understand laws, technical specifications and also how to help reduce traffic accidents.”
