Tens of thousands of tourists in Thailand have reportedly fled popular resort islands as tropical storm Pabuk approaches.
Ferry services and flights have been suspended and evacuations have begun in Thailand ahead of the storm which is expected to pound southern beach resorts.
The country’s Meteorological Department has warned residents to prepare for strong winds and rough seas and waves of up to 6.7 metres have been predicted for some areas.
Rain is already falling around the Gulf of Thailand and torrential downpours are expected in 16 provinces when Pabuk makes its expected landfall late on Friday.

125 foreign tourists taken off Koh Racha ahead of storm
January 04, 2019 14:44
More than 120 foreign tourists who were stuck on Koh Racha have returned safely to Phuket ahead of tropical storm Pabuk.
A boat from the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources Phuket Office was sent on Friday morning to pick up 125 tourists who had been visiting Koh Racha and return them to Phuket.
Phuket’s Governor Phakkaphong Tavipatana said officials are prepared for any emergency situation.
About 700 CCTV cameras around Phuket have been linked to the Flood Storm Landslide Phuket Operation Centre at the Phuket Provincial Hall, he added.
The governor earlier issued an official warning that vessels “must” remain on shore in every district connecting to the Andaman Sea in Phuket ahead of the storm.
Pabuk, the first tropical storm in decades to strike during the peak holiday season, is expected to make landfall on Friday night with the eye passing over Nakhon Si Thammarat further to the south.

if u were on vacation would u desire to hang out indoors while it rained and howled outside,
If you had a chance to continue ur vacation elsewhere?
On second thought, maybe safer to sit it out indoors

Thai Tropical Storm Weakens After Thrashing Southern Region
By Anuchit Nguyen
January 5, 2019, 10:38 AM GMT+7
Thailand’s most powerful tropical storm in decades has weakened after strong wind and flash floods disrupted oil production and flights, leaving thousands of tourists stranded near the nation’s southern beaches.
Wind from tropical storm Pabuk slowed to 55 kilometers per hour (34 mph) from 65 kph Saturday before crossing the peninsula to the Andaman Sea at 9 a.m. Bangkok time, the Meteorological Department said in its latest update. Bangkok Airways Pcl resumed flying on Saturday between Bangkok and Koh Samui to pick up stranded passengers after suspending flights on Friday, according to an airline statement.
The storm disrupted the peak period for the Thai tourism industry, which makes up for about a quarter of the country’s economy. Overseas visitor numbers had only just recovered after a slump following a tour boat accident off Phuket in July that killed dozens of Chinese holidaymakers.
The economic loss from the tropical storm may reach 5 billion baht ($156 million), the Bangkok Post reported, citing local authorities. One fisherman was killed, while another is still missing, according to the newspaper.
