Who Dumped the (s)Off-Drinks ?

Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

Who Dumped the (s)Off-Drinks ?

Post by CEOCambodiaNews »

Cambodia News (Sihanoukville): On June 19, 2019, at 9 pm, some local people discovered many cases of expired soft drink that have been dumped near Yeay Mao statue, in Sangkat 3, in Sihanoukville. Surprisingly, considering all the garbage dumped about the city streets, people were shocked by this and reported it to the police.
The police are now searching to contact the owner for reeducation to tell them that public land is not a garbage dump and they must throw the expired drink in the garbage truck. There is no mention of a fine or any legal penalty for this act, so it is questionable whether simple reeducation will deter future offenders.

Hint: a Chinese casino.

Khmers have no clue, and even if they knew wouldn't give a fuck about expiry dates

I have found Khmers to be over-sensitive to "best before" dates. They often refuse to consume things that are the least bit beyond the date. These dates are known in the West to be over-cautious and shops and market stalls sell goods (at a discount) long after the dates, chocolate is a good example. "Use by" dates are different, they must be respected.

That used to make me laugh- my ex-mother-in-law would regularly go through her spices stocks, and weed out the ones exceeding best before dates. Best before means the same as Use-by, surely!?
It was especially funny because she was so tight and stingy, if a recipe called for a tablespoon, you’d likely get half a teaspoon of ingredient.

I take use by dates with a small pinch of salt, too. 1 minute before midnight = no problem. 1 minute beyond midnight = immediately rancid and injurious, leading to the most severe consequences.
If it doesn’t turn my tongue or burn my nostrils, it can’t all be bad, surely? And given that French cheeses do both within any ‘date’... I rest my case as I position myself within easy reach of the bucket.
