Police Seize 17kg Suitcase of Meth at Bavet Border

Cambodia Breaking News (Phnom Penh): On June 13, 2019, at 8 pm, the police stopped a man on foot carrying a suitcase while he was crossing the border from Cambodia to Vietnam.

The police report said the immigration police were patrolling at the Bavet border, crossing no 611, when they saw the suspect carrying the suitcase. They said when the man was stopped for questioning, he immediately dropped the suitcase, and bolted like a frightened rabbit.
When the border police looked inside the suitcase, they found 17 kg of crystal methamphetamine.
The police sent the drug haul to the department of anti-drug in Svay Reing to follow the legal procedure. The drug mule has escaped.

There have been a number of large scale busts on the border from Bavet to Vietnam recently, and also inside Vietnam itself, as it seems that the Cambodian and Vietnamese authorities are making an effort to stem the (heavy) flow of methamphetamine cross-border traffic. However, in this case, it was pure chance (or it may have been a tip-off), that the police stopped one drug courier with 17kgs, which does make one wonder how much more is getting through.

I saw figures from a couple of years back that at least 60% of the meth here is home grown. China is more designer drugs and bath salts.

If it's coming from China, why pass through Cambodia to go to Vietnam ? More likely coming from Myanmar/Laos to China via Vietnem ?
My opinion and i don't really know. However, for sure there is a huge amount of trafficking going through Cambodia and no one can deny this.

The drug mule has escaped.
That's some competent work by the authorities.

It seems like half the job was done, but the good thing is the goods were seized by the authorities. Unfortunately the mule ran like a rabbit (Roger Bannister style) that the dogs could not catch on a sophisticated policed, boarder crossing. With the quantity of the haul (Ice) if we assumed the worse, that possibly of corruption of none payments, that is a significant loss to the drug cartel. Or are them type of days well over in this part of the world. being Cambodia has always been known as the wheel hub for distributions of drugs to other lands. With methamphetamine coming from Laos, Myanmar and Thailand with destinations along the way to China and beyond.
Always "hope" but never "expect".
