Has the Chinafication started in Kampot?

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. I didn’t see any causian around except -3-5 people. Almost everyone is Chinese here ! I was planing to visit pubs and hostess bars but I changed my mind. I will escape to Koh Rong Samloem tomorrow !

There is still the youth centre plaza, which is passable, and a handful of bars in victory hill, however they aren't very welcoming.

I went there recently and visited the Stumble Inn. Disinterested staff, rude barang owner and warm beer.
In fact is was exactly like the Stumble Inn down pub street!

What a coincidence!

Went to Martini instead for a few.

Some Kampot expats have started up a petition online against a project to build a massive 42-storey building in the old town area of Kampot, which is supposedly a protected heritage zone.
If anyone has more information on this project, please post it here.
Reconsider Project of 42 story Twin Tower in Old Kampot Town

This petition has been created by Jean Yves D. and may not represent the views of the Avaaz community.

Kampot is a well known town for his heritage from the early 20th century with a lot of old buildings. A provincial decree has been prepared by provincial authorities which has estabished construction rules in a define heritage protected area . There is a project to build a twin tower of 42 stories in the heart of the old town which is in this protected zone. A collective of friend of Kampot will address a letter to Sandech Decho HE prime minister and to the King Preah Boromneit Norodom Seyha Mony to ask them to consider to modify this project to built heritage friendly construction in that place and move the high tower outside of the Old Town.

IMO it wont ever happen for a few reasons
  • No demand and already oversupply now our Chinese friends have cooled down
  • Geography - the land all around is mud, silt and clay and probably no solid earth base at all. Add a fairly big river that can raise and drop 3-5m in both directions, is fast flowing and tidal, and a mere 50m from the site. Guesses are that they would have to go 20 floors down to have a base which would fix the parking problems
  • Seems similar to the Boo Young projects in PP. Get all the permissions signed off by HE and then wait to sell it to a developer. Look at the site near the airport or next door to Sokha hotel in Choy Changvar. They had a groundbreaking on an auspicious day where they drove a few piles in and blocked the streets for the dignitaries down from PP (including HE from memory) with lots of new heavy machinery on site. I heard mention that this constitutes progress and therefore validates the contracts
  • Some months on all the machinery has gone and there is no work or workers on site
  • Apart from the rendered drawings around the fence there is no sales office in evidence. Nothing that size will be constructed before a large percentage of the space is presold

A 42 twin tower in the heart of Kampot will look as out of place and welcome as a bucket of turds in a swimming pool!
