Video on Domestic Violence in Cambodia Goes Viral (VIDEO)

Post by CEOCambodiaNews »

NGO’s domestic violence video exceeds 1M views on Facebook
19 December 2018
A Cambodian NGO’s educational video campaign on domestic violence has gone viral, having been viewed more than one million times on Facebook.

The End Violence Together campaign was produced by This Life Cambodia (TLC) – a development organisation supporting vulnerable children, families and communities in Cambodia – and features a short film depicting four scenes of women experiencing domestic violence.

The two-minute film sees an office worker, a rice field worker, a garment worker and a student, all placing helmets on their heads before they return home. The message is a simple but powerful one – women, across the globe, are more likely to be murdered in their own home by a husband or family member than anywhere else.

“More than 1.7 million people have been reached by this educational campaign video or one in 10 people in Cambodia. Many people have reported their own experiences about violent abuse,” TLC’s marketing and communication manager Jaime Gill said.

He said the purpose of the campaign was to “mobilise communities to address the risk factors and impact of domestic violence on families and communities . . . and strengthen the coordination and provision of community responses to increase access to justice and support for victims/survivors.”

TLC’s domestic violence project known as the This Life Without Violence programme works with more than 3,500 women and children across 22 communes in Cambodia.

There were over 256k reactions (likes, comments and shares) to the video by Facebook users moved by the scenes, with TLC receiving a flurry of feedback from women in Cambodia sharing their own experiences.

The 2014 Cambodian Demographic and Health Survey said among women aged between 15 and 49 years, approximately 20 per cent (670,156) had suffered physical violence, while six per cent has faced sexual abuse.

Strikingly, 49 per cent of sexually and physically abused women did not report the crimes.

TLC community programme coordinator Hong Sarith said: “Sadly, many women we work with who face violence don’t realise it is unacceptable and that they are protected by the law. Only a quarter of women who experience violence seek any help. Forty per cent [of women who do not report the crimes] say this is because they think it’s normal, while 30 per cent don’t report because of embarrassment.

“We need to remind men that domestic violence is a crime and women that there is a law to protect them. It’s time to End Violence Together.”

Many Cambodians think that domestic violence is a normal state of affairs. That's why this campaign LET’S END DOMESTIC VIOLENCE TOGETHER is a necessary tool to educate and inform both men and women.

NGO film addressing domestic violence wins Australian award
By
Phnom Penh Post -
June 12, 2019

A social media campaign created by Siem Reap-based NGO This Life Cambodia to tackle domestic violence is gaining international recognition having just won the Best Social Media Campaign of the Year award at the Not-For-Profit Technology Awards in Australia, as well as being a finalist for the global Grassroots Justice Prize.

The two-minute campaign film – that sees an office worker, a rice field worker, a garment worker and a student all placing helmets on their heads before they return home – beat the campaign of runner-up Fansdonate x Bush Heritage Australia, according to an announcement issued by organisers last month.

This Life Cambodia’s campaign was driven by a creative video which grabbed public attention and provoked conversation by depicting a world in which women and children weren’t wearing helmets to protect themselves from road accidents, but wore them inside their homes to protect themselves from domestic violence.

TLC organisation wins Grassroots Justice Prize

Siem Reap-based This Life Cambodia won the Grassroots Justice Prize in a ceremony held in New York on Monday, beating 200 other organisations from 65 countries.

TLC is a community development organisation that works alongside communities to develop projects that benefit the lives of children and families. The organisation won the public vote for the global Grassroots Justice Prize.

“TLC beat four other public finalists from the USA, Guatemala, Liberia and Kenya to take home the trophy and a prize package worth more than $4,000,” a press release noted. “TLC garnered 70 percent of the thousands of votes placed worldwide.”

TLC won the award for its entire range of programmes focusing on Cambodian people’s rights, although special attention was paid to the social media campaign to stop domestic violence, which had previously won Best Social Media Campaign of the year award at the Not For Profit Technology Awards in Australia and was shortlisted for two Social Media Marketing Awards in August.

Billy Gorter, executive director of This Life Cambodia, said that winning the Grassroots Justice Prize is one of the greatest honours of his 11 years working in Cambodia, and will encourage all of his team to work even harder for the rights of Cambodians to create a better future for themselves.

Local NGO mixes media and activism to fix society

Chan Rothana, the well-known Khmer boxer and MMA fighter, enters a gym and starts preparing for a fight, jumping rope, kicking heavy bags and sparring with a partner.

When its fight time, he makes his way to the ring accompanied by raucous cheers from an adoring crowd. But when the announcer reveals a female name as his opponent, the crowd goes silent and the camera pans to a frightened woman trembling in the opposite corner of the ring.

Rothana refuses to fight, takes off his gloves and helps the woman up from the ground.

The objective of the video produced by Siem Reap-based NGO This Life Cambodia (TLC) is to shine a light on domestic violence in the Kingdom, where a third of men have admitted to physically abusing their partners.

The video, entitled Honourable Warriors, recently won the Best Campaign Driven by a Low Budget category at the 2020 Media and Marketing Global Awards hosted by Festival of Media.

TLC spent $4,500 on the video, although the contest allowed for each entrant to spend up to $322,140 on its campaign.

It was first released during last year’s international campaign 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence. In 2019, TLC also won the Best Social Media Campaign of the Year award at the Not-For-Profit Technology Awards in Australia for its End Violence Together campaign.

Unfortunately I don’t think domestic violence is only against women. And pretending that it is doesn’t help. This NGO should know better.

Why do you say that ? Nobody is pretending that men are not victims of domestic violence, but unfortunately, women and children are the principal victims.
There has been a spike in reported cases of domestic violence recently and this NGO is campaigning for LET’S END DOMESTIC VIOLENCE TOGETHER (men and women.)

I agree that there should not be a mentality of men bad and women good, so why object to a campaign where men and women are equally on board and listened to ?

Let's end domestic violence together (involving both men and women) is not the same as acknowledging that women commit acts of domestic violence. The text that you quote above only focuses on women facing domestic violence, and says that violent men need to change their behavior. No recognition that men may be victims and women may be perpetrators. Women may also be the perpetrators against children.

Just look at data from some countries where they researchers have actually been interested to find out if women commit acts of domestic violence and you'll see that it's not as one sided as this type of campaign makes it out to be.

It's not a one way street and some of these NGOs need to grow up and recognize that.
