Timely reminder to VIN check any car before you buy - most are US imports and have a colourful history. But 1 in 10 is actually clean, besides the obligatory odometer clocking; but even then the VIN report will give you the real mileage before it was shipped out so you can get a good understanding of how much wear & tear the car has been through to date. Paying the $20 or whatever it is for the VIN check websites is probably the best money you'll spend - and give you a good laugh at some of the wrecks that look pristine on the outside but will fold like an accordion if in any national road smash.

That's all true, but there's many cars without declared damage slipping through the auction net also, so no substitute for checking panel gaps, weld seams and crumple zones carefully before purchasing.
