Closing a bank account at ANZ bank
A Cambodian friend of mine recently switched jobs. As his previous employer used ANZ bank to transfer the salary he opened an account with that bank. His current employer uses a different bank, so he decided to close his ANZ bank account.
Last week he walked into an ANZ branch (not the one he used regularly) and told the employee he wanted to withdraw his money and close his account.
He handed over his bankcard and that there was no need for identification. The employee just asked why he wanted to close, he explained the situation... 5 min later he was handed over the cash, had to sign a paper the account was closed... end of transaction.
He was surprised that there was no checking for identification (he had his ID card on him, but it was never asked). Weird situation if you ask me.

His bank card would have his photo on it also his account details on the banks system contains a photo. This offers a three way check when a customer attends any branch.
Re: Closing a bank account at ANZ bank
I have a different experience with ANZ: same situation, we used an account there for salary transfer. Recently our bank account and Visa cards have been blocked. It happened on a Saturday which meant no money for the WE. On the next Monday we went to the main branch and were asked to re-provide all documents proving our identity and our legal stay in Cambodia. They explained that because we had opened our ANZ bank account 10 years ago, the Compliance Department suddenly realised that our passeport and visa were outdated in their system. Instead of giving us a call and ask for an update they simply blocked access to our money.
What a nice way to treat your old clients!
It took us 3 hours of very unpleasant discussion and providing the required documents to re-establish access to our money, withdraw our cash and run away!
