Thaksins Thai Raksa Chart party down and out

Thailand is Cambodia's neighbor to the West, and this forum is dedicated to Thai news, stories, reviews, blogs, videos, Thai people and anything else related to the country. A lot of expats have both lived and worked in Cambodia and Thailand, and this area is a place to discuss all aspects of life in Thailand and what's going on there. Most topics are about Bangkok and Pattaya because of their larger populations of expatriates and tourists in those cities, but this is for all things Thai.

Thai Election Results Show No Clear Winner but Junta Party Favored
BANGKOK — Long-delayed results of Thailand's first election since a 2014 military coup released on Wednesday produced no clear winner but gave a pro-army party a clear advantage in its bid to install the current junta leader as an elected prime minister.

The opposition threatened legal action against Wednesday's results, saying that a new seat allocation formula robbed the "democratic front" alliance of a majority in the 500-seat House of Representatives.

The results are likely to set up a period of coalition building, since neither the pro-military bloc of parties nor a "democratic front" opposition alliance so far has enough votes to elect a prime minister under rules written by the junta.

Any government that emerges is likely to be weak,
Still, Wednesday's results made it more likely that the party of coup leader Prayuth Chan-ocha will stay in power because it needs fewer allies among small and medium-sized parties to get to the 376 votes needed to elect the prime minister in the combined House and Senate vote.

It doesn't really matter who won because one side is as bad as the other.

Whichever party/coalition is "in power" will simply try to gain the most benefit for themselves ans their supporters while trying to make the other side look bad. The opposition will meanwhile go all out to derail those who currently hold the reins. In the end, the common people suffer and Thailand is doomed.

Plus, they still don't even have a parliamentary building to meet in, do they?

like i said before, let the army have it..
BANGKOK (Reuters) - Thailand's pro-army Palang Pracharat party was looking for coalition partners on Thursday from a wide field of potential allies as it seeks to keep military junta leader Prayuth Chan-ocha, who led a 2014 coup, in office as prime minister.

The party is expected to easily form the next government, since it needs only a few more votes in the elected House of Representatives to choose the prime minister under complicated new electoral rules written by the military regime.

Palang Pracharat's most obvious potential allies are the pro-establishment Democrat Party and the Bhumjaithai party, which campaigned on marijuana legalisation among other issues.

The Democrats won 52 seats and Bhumjaithai 51, meaning that either could push Palang Pracharat, which won 115 seats, well over the magic number of 126 votes needed in the House to approve the prime minister under the new system.

Unexpected contender emerges as potential Thai premier
Post-election uncertainty offers chance for technocrat to be caretaker leader

https://asia.nikkei.com/Politics/Thai-e ... ai-premier
These looming troubles have sparked speculation about a potential caretaker government being formed to break a likely parliamentary gridlock until the next elections. The Thai monarch has also appealed for peace and national unity following his coronation last weekend.

Sources within Thailand's conservative establishment view the monarch's call for unity as furthering the case for Ampon to head a caretaker government as a way to prevent the country from falling into months-long political uncertainty and acrimony.

Until now, Ampon has sat on the sidelines of political power. He served as the cabinet secretary for three successive governments, was the secretary-general of the National Economic Social and Development Board, a government think tank, and had stints as chairman of the board of directors at Thai Airways and the Bank of Thailand, the central bank.

Late last year, the Thai- and U.S.-educated economist was handpicked by the monarch to serve on the Privy Council, a body of royal advisers. Then early this year, the king appointed him to serve on the executive board of the Crown Property Bureau, which manages the vast wealth and assets owned by the palace, which is now under the direct authority of the monarch.

Well-connected Thais were hardly surprised by Ampon's elevation within palace circles. "Ampon has been a loyalist of the new king even when he was the crown prince," said one source from a family of royalists. "His Majesty trusts his record as a technocrat."
