Rare Wild Banteng Filmed in Mondulkiri
Mondulkiri, Cambodia News: Good news for wildlife officers in Mondulkiri, who were happy to receive a video of a young banteng that was filmed last week by local people on the road to Angng Chey Chey Village, Pu Chrey Commune, Pichdi Da District, Mondul Kiri Province.
Keo Sopheak, director of the Department of Environment of Mondulkiri province, said the pictures showed that the calf was limping but appears to be recovering and in good health. Wild banteng are indigenous to South East Asia, but have become rare because of poachers hunting them for their meat and their horns.
Mr Sopheak has asked people not to hunt these wild animals because it is illegal and also because Cambodians should protect these rare species to maintain the wildlife diversity that is our heritage. He also said that the banteng often carry diseases that will infect people who eat the meat.
These animals have become extremely rare and the species is listed in the IUCN Red List as EN an endangered species.

Public urged to preserve Kingdom’s biodiversity
The Environment Ministry yesterday urged people to preserve the Kingdom’s biodiversity which plays a major role in the natural food chain which is vital for human survival.
The call was made during an event to mark the 6th International Day for Biological Diversity, under the theme “Our Biodiversity, Our Food, Our Health,” held yesterday in Mondulkiri province’s Sen Monorom Park.
About 1,000 people from relevant ministries, institutions, international and national partner organisations and citizens participated in the event.
Chea Sam Ang, a ministry undersecretary of state, said at the event that the food, nutrition and health systems of humans depend on biodiversity which also contributes to climate change mitigation, rehabilitation of the ecosystem, clean water and hunger elimination.
“Preserving biodiversity in Cambodia contributes to maintaining the natural equilibrium in ecosystems not only for Cambodia but also the whole world,” he added.
