It's Official; We are Killing Life on Earth

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. To those of us who know
To those of us who care
To those of us who grieve
For those of us who often can see nothing but black ahead
We must keep hope. We must!

But how?

You started by asking the right question.

We can do a few small things to make this world a better place.

Most of us are not going to make any big changes which will affect the future of the planet.

Many of us wont live long enough to see the worst of it.

A smart thing to do is not have any (more) children.

You can always hope there is a God.

If any of you were in Cambodia during the war, one thing which would probably come to your mind is: Why dont they stop having children? Why bring children into such a terrible situation? But they think the opposite. They had children to look after them in their old age.

Think about it from another perspective. The worst will occur after our lifetime. So do those things you want to do. Live life to the full.

Scotch on the rocks: distilleries fear climate crisis will endanger whisky production

Scotland’s whisky-makers reveal they had to halt production in 2018 heatwave because they ran out of water

Sun 2 Jun 2019 07.00 BST
Scotland’s nature conservation agency last week painted an apocalyptic vision of a country devastated by the climate crisis, from polluted rivers to eroded peatlands and forests devoid of birds. Now comes a warning about another part of Scottish culture which could, it is feared, also be hit by global heating: whisky.

Scottish distilleries have revealed that during last year’s blistering heatwave, they had to halt production because they ran out of water. In a summer marked by high temperatures and little rainfall, water levels in springs and rivers fell so low that in the Scottish Highlands some whisky makers missed up to a month’s production.

“We lost the whole of September,” said Callum Fraser of the family-run Glenfarclas distillery on the River Spey. While some whisky makers take their water from the river, Glenfarclas – which means “valley of the green grass” – has its own private water supply. “It’s a natural spring, and it was dry,” said Fraser.

The month’s pause saw Glenfarclas production down by up to 300,000 litres, he added. Rumours abound of other distilleries seeing similar problems. “We weren’t the only one, just the most vocal,” he added.

Well that is a terrible perspective. The UN report recently said we could have changing weather, wildfires, food shortages, huge amounts of coral reef dying and many other things by as early as 2040.

I am not sure how old you are but I would like to believe that is in my lifetime.

Also, not too sure what trying to reduce meat intake/plastic use and switching to renewables wherever possible can be seen as not living life to the full, it’s barely a change but could make a big difference.

That is an incredibly selfish thing to say. Why shouldnt the younger generation be allowed to have children because the previous generation fucked it up for them?
You can always hope there is a God.
Well let’s not get silly now.

explorer, sometimes u just cant help urself
this statement just gets me
Most of us are not going to make any big changes which will affect the future of the planet.
Thank god there are many many that dont feel that way!!!
if everyone made just one little change, ( Doesn't need be a BIG change, even just saying no to plastic bags ) it would make a difference!!!
Or walking one day instead of driving your suv

Many of us parents, always hoped we would leave the world a better place for our kids, unfortunately, thats just not going to happen and it saddens me.
In a nation run by swine, all pigs are upward-mobile and the rest of us are fucked until we can put our acts together: not necessarily to win, but mainly to keep from losing completely. HST

Chin up everybody, we GOTTA keep hope!
And keep trying.
for the kids.

The facts is bad - but also, fact is, we can make a difference.
Go see Prek Toal, one of the all-time great conservation success stories
and largely the results of one man's effort. (initially)

Hats off to Fred Goes, Cambodia's greatest living national conservation treasure. (in my book anyway)

Typhoons, floods worsening in Cambodia
By KHMER TIMES
June 03, 2019
Natural disasters that hit Cambodia this 2019 have destroyed about 7,000 houses and buildings for the first five months, suggesting an increase by three folds compared to the same period last year. The update was shared by Keo Vy, advisor to the National Committee for Disaster Management, recently to the local media. Lightning during the same period claimed 46 lives and caused severe and minor injuries to 44 other people, added Vy.
