KUCHING (Bernama) – The police have obtained an order to remand to four days a man who was arrested in connection with the cheating case involving 47 Malaysians who were detained in Cambodia.

Kuching Court registrar Dora Undau issued the order following an application from the case investigating officer, ASP Pricha Azin.

According to Sarawak Commercial Criminal Investigation Department head, Superintendant Mustafa Kamal Gani, the 34-year-old suspect was arrested at his house last Saturday.

To date, 23 people, comprising 18 men and five women, have come forward to lodge police reports on the case.

Recently it was reported that the 47 Malaysians were detained in Cambodia since December 11 last year on charges of cheating, initiating and carrying out illegal online gambling activities.

All 47 were released after it was found that they were duped by a job agency syndicate.

47 detained in Cambodia might not be trafficking victims, say cops
Larissa Lumandan -
February 28, 2019 3:17 PM

KUCHING: Police today said the case in which 47 Malaysians were detained in Cambodia might not be related to human trafficking as some of them had done the same job before.

State criminal investigation department (CID) senior assistant commissioner Dennis Leong also said that some of the detainees were not “first-timers”.
“So you can see that it doesn’t match. That is why we are trying to get more witnesses to come forward,” he said after the handover of duties ceremony for the district police chief here.

Leong also said the main investigation is being handled by the commercial crime investigation department.

“On our side in the CID, we have also begun some investigations. We can only find out if there was human trafficking involved once we are done with our inquiries.
